I was changing my oil today and decided to do a DIY for people that want to change the oil on their Forte's but don't know how/never done it before. So here ya go...
You'll need:
Ramps
Oil drain pan
Trashbags or cardboard
Paper towels
2 gallon zip lock bag
Oil (I use Shell syntec full synthetic 5w20... can get it at BJ's 6 qts for $27.99)
Oil Filter (can get one at KIA, or if you go to advance auto or autozone pickup a Purolator PL14459 for about $5... fits both the 2.0 and 2.4 litre engine)
17mm wrench
Crush washers for the oil pan bolt (if you're replacing it)
A beer
Step one: Drive car around for about 10 mins to get the oil warmed up so it'll flow more freely when you drain it.
Step two: Get a beer:
Step three: Get out your oil. I use Shell Syntec 5W20 Full Synthetic. Make sure you have 5 or 6 quarts... usually ends up taking about 4.5 quarts(I have the 2.4 engine).
Here's the Oil capacity for both the 2.0 and 2.4 litre engine:
2.0 - 4.1 US quarts (3.9l)
2.4 - 4.5 US quarts (4.3l)
Step four: Drive car up on ramps and open up hood
Step five: Take off engine oil cap
Step six: Get out 17mm wrench
Step 7: Get under car and find oil pan drain bolt... I circled it in red in the picture:
Step 8: Put some trashbags or cardboard under the car so when you drain the oil it doesn't ruin your garage floor if it misses the oil pan. Then position your oil pan under the car... try and position it so when the oil shoots out it hits the pan and not the floor. Loosen bolt and let oil drain... be ready to grab the oil drain pan and move it in case it misses it.
Step 9: Get out your beer and relax while the oil drains.
Step 10: Replace the crush washer on the bolt if you want. You can get them at the Kia dealer pretty cheap... I think I got like 6 for $2. Then reinstall the bolt into your oil pan to about 30 lb-ft torque.
Step 11: Get out your oil filter
Step 12: Always double check the number on the actual oil filter and make sure it matches the one you need. Sometimes they get put in the wrong boxes and it wouldn't work out too well if you put the wrong oil filter on your car.
Step 13: Get under car and find old oil filter.
Step 14: Remove oil filter... take your 2 gallon zip lock bag and put it under the filter when you remove it to catch the oil.
Step 15: Take a paper towel and wipe off the excess oil:
Step 16: Open a bottle of your new oil
Step 17: Dip your finger in the NEW oil and lubricate the gasket around the oil filter:
Step 18: Install new oil filter... make it handtight and then another 1/4 of a turn (so about 10 lb-ft torque).
Step 19: Fill engine with 4.5 quarts of oil (4.1 quarts if you have the 2.0 litre engine). Re-install engine cap and run engine for about 30 seconds. Turn off car and wait a min or two for the oil to return to the oil pan. Check for leaks. Take out oil dipstick, wipe off, reinsert, pull out and check levels. Take off cap and add more oil little by little if needed.
Step 20: Put cap back on engine and shut hood. Check for leaks around the oil pan bolt and oil filter one last time.
Step 21: Back car back down off of ramps... if your car is lowered like mine you might need to put a block of wood in front of it to get up on the ramps.
Step 22: You're done!
Hope this helps anyone who wanted to change their oil but didn't know how
