Yes I'm using the exact Spectre cone filter. I know exactly what you're talking about with those two little nubs, but mines went in fairly easy after I gradually pushed and twist it. Do you have the 3 inch filter?

Hey ForteLX+, do you know if this setup is safe for the ecu, or should we completely remove the box? Any help will be appreciative.
great idea! gonna try it when i get my car out of the shop tomorrow.. then it's time for my rebadging project (broken K's front n back, and Cerato & SLi emblems to replace Forte & SX)
jimminyjamez, I saw this thread earlier today and got excited at how easy and safe this looked.
Went to an Advanced Auto and told the guy what I wanted to do. At first I had just a specter air filter on, but it looked kind of flimsy. So I used some 3'' aluminum piping with the same filter and got a killer sound and better throttle response!
Many thanks to making this thread, I hope this post can help others as well!
Here's some pics... more to follow when it's day time :P

Its 24 degrees celsius right now. Ill go for a drive and let you know.
I honestly couldn't tell a difference between the orginal mod and the Spectre SRI other than the fact the Spectre was quieter (and further away from the driver's seat).
I am considering just reverting back to the original mod.
I am sure the turbokit CAI is awesome, In fact, I am hoping to get it along with the catback as soon as the budget allows. In the meantime, this is effective, easy, and cheap.
All I used for the Spectre SRI is the filter, a 90 degree tube, a 3" to 2" reducer, their vacuum adapter kit, and some vacuum tubing. Aprox $40 all together, including the $20 filter. The 90 degree tube was a tough fit, but it works. Maybe a 60 degree would be better, I don't know. Here are some pics of parts I used for the Spectre install.
The ECU is fine, cooler then the intake tube.
Ill check it after driving home tomorrow when its hotter out.
I really don't think there is going to be an issue.

Not having your breather hooked up to your intake is a bad idea for a daily driver.
It would be a good idea to weld on a connector or two (if you had two on the stock intake).
On my setup, both hoses are connected to the intake tube. That's why I got the vacuum adapter kit. I drilled 2 holes in the tube, used the supplied parts, and used the hose I purchased to run both lines. I agree. Not a good idea to run a car without the breather/vacuum hoses attached.

Hi jimminyjamez,
Any reason you are considering dropping the spectre intake kit n moving back to the "stock" mod?
I'm working on this myself. Bought the filter and was about to buy the intake and vacuum hose kit, but since you've tried both I'm VERY interested in your opinion, and why you mentioned you may go back to the original mod.
Thanks man!!!

What do you think of making a CAI out of spectre parts? I was thinking of doing the short ram, and then I thought I would like to keep the air even cooler than it would be in the stock filter position, so I was thinking of using the spectre intake kit that has a long piece, and 45, 20, 33 degree angles where needed to place the filter somewhere near the grille/headlight, so that the air it's sucking would be cooler. Then I realized that's pretty much a CAI. heh..
Any thoughts?
Also, what would be the benefit of using the slightly more expensive spectre filter, the one with the hole in the end, that supposedly creates an air vortex for better atomization (i believe nepaforte's photo shows that one)?
thanks guys! this is my first intake mod, aside from a short ram and breather on my old ford focus, but someone else did that.
Well I was too antsy so I bought parts for short ram (filter to rest on stock filter box) with the more expensive higher-velocity/volume cone filter.
I figure if I do try to construct a semi-cold air intake (not AS low-sitting as a true CAI, but still farther from the engine) I can always use the parts I have now for that project (45, 60 degree angles, vacuum/sensor section, coupler(s), filter).
Still hope to hear what forum members think about that type of construction (semi-cold air intake); Perhaps with the intake filter not quite as low as the driver's fog lamp, and maybe with an additional flexible spectre pipe (the 28" one) from the stock air duct (above radiator) to the filter to force cold air into the system.

I think there was a kit that allows you to punch a hole in the aluminum piping and insert a connector to reattach the breather to the air intake.
yep. the ram intake hose still hooked up to the box.
That ram intake hose probably is not efficiently cooling the ECU if there is no air being pulled in at the correct CFM's from the intake. Considering this box is basically bypassed.
I wouldn't even recommend taking it on a long drive to test the ECU temp. You could burn it up. Dont risk it. Short Drives around town is not a good way to judge the ECU temp.
Any comments or corrections anyone? I'm curious to this as well.

I am going back and forth, honestly. I am thinking the original mod might be pulling in cooler air than the ram intake setup. Could be wrong though. Also, the original mod was a bit louder on acceleration in a good way, but still silent at cruising speed...
