Any comments or corrections anyone? I'm curious to this as well.
I have done hour long drives in 100 degree heat with no issues. You might be right about whether it is effectively cooling it...I don't honestly know.

My current setup has the stock box top on with the ram intake hose still connected...

I am not concerned about killing the ECU...Turbokit's CAI removes the stock cooling hoses all together, and no one had complained about ECU heat issues thus far.

Just relocate the Ram intake from the front of the hood to the inside fender area where a CAI filter would normally go. That way your still getting cool air but its less turbulent. and you dont have to change anything else inside the box. Maybe remove the pre-filter (carbon filter) and just put it back when it comes time for smogging. And replace the stock filter with a high flow filter.

I believe the Turbo kits CAI re located the ECU to a cooler spot though.

Measure your intake port. Then buy a Spectre HPR Filter

The first time I went out it was a long drive, it was perfectly fine. Maybe down in CA it might not be a good idea. But if your in the pacific marina area I wouldn't be worried.

D1FR3NT, you can more or less grab a 3'' filter. I went to autozone and asked the guys there. One of them worked at a kia dealership for a little while, and the other had done countless air intakes.

They ended up recommending the aluminum piping for rigidity's sake, but you can get away with slapping on a filter.

Don't wast your money on anything other then a filter.
Unless your getting an actual CAI.

After all of this, I agree completely. For easy, cheap, effective, just throw on the filter. When budget allows, get the CAI (and use this stock mod with just the filter during questionable weather/seasons).

I agree. Though I do like the look of my chrome setup.

However, after setting it all up, I realizeD how plasticky the spectre parts feel (my shop only had aluminum in 4" size, and it's expensive too) and I wouldn't want to build my "semi-CAI" with them. Will just keep what I have or maybe go back to stock intake path with my new high flow filter. Kinda wish I didn't buy the spectre chrome. Wouldve been fine with just filter. Hoses are a bit sketchy now too. Somehow my intake puts the hoses at a weird angle that makes one of them seem like it might pop out.

The growl turned heads in my office parking lot though. Haha.

I only noticed improvement in first gear and then later towards 3500rpm in 2nd a bit, and more pronounced in 3rd throughout the rpm range. I've always felt it a bit sluggish in 2nd gear right after shifting up.

So is it safe to just replace the filter with the cone filter and not alter anything else?

I don't see any issues with this mode safety wise. It uses 99% stock parts and setup.

jimminyjamez, I love the throaty throttle but i'm getting a little knock from the cone free-floating in the original stock filter box... did you have this issue? I was thinking that just another clamp in the right spot would solve the problem.

thx

When you guys were talking about how it's not good to use for a daily driver, were you talking about using just the cone, or the short ram, or something else entirely?

I didn't have this issue. Just a simple clamp would solve that, I'm sure.
