Default Air intake

Can anyone tell me what that hopper looking thing on the stock intake in-between the tb and air box is? I am thinking of trying to make my stock intake more efficient by running smooth pipe from tb to air box and from the box to the air intake and adding a k&n. To eliminate the parts of the hoses with ridges and wanted to know if that thing holds any importance.

I don't think it's a catch cause where it is located wouldn't make it very good and have no way of emptying it

It's a resonator of sorts. At least that's what those types of chambers have been called in the past. I had a Chevy Lumina and a Pontiac Grand Am before and people always referred to them as resonators.

It is there to reduce the noise in the intake.
