How To: DIY OEM Fog Lights on Sedan (EX)

**Disclaimer**
A lot of this runs parallel with what Linear did with his fog install in his Koup. I had a few things different. If you aren't comfortable with basic wiring like this then leave it to a professional.

I bought my Forte w/o fog lights. I really wanted them so I decided to tackle the project myself.


Goals


1.) To install the OEM Fogs to come on with the parking lights
2.) Have a clean install with no ugly wiring or visible switches

Process


I started the process with finalizing the wiring harness. I began by cutting off the connectors that came crimped in the ends where the fogs attach. I stripped the ends of the cut wire and the pigtails. I soldered the connections and wrapped with shrink tube and electrical tape to ensure a proper seal.


With the harness complete I moved to putting it into the car. I attached the relay to the fuse box mounting bolt and ziptied the fuse box for the harness to it. The ground went to the battery ground where it bolts to the fender. The power wire (with inline fuse) from the relay is bolted to the positive side bolt of the fuse box. I ran the wire to my switch around the engine bay and into the hole in the firewall with a plate seen here:

Relay and ground mounted:


There is a rubber seal/gasket on the back of the plate. I pierced a hole in the middle of the gasket and fed the wire through it. I then installed the plate back in. I am comfortable that this will not pinch the wire over time. I didn't crank on it very hard and there is rubber surrounding it to keep the metal from rubbing anything. Here is the view from inside. You can see the rubber gasket here with the wire through the middle.



From there I wired everything inside. I used the Add-A-Circuit to tap into the tail lamps. I pulled the 10A fuse on the bottom right and tapped there. With it set this way the fogs will turn on with the parking lights.



You can also see the photo above I mounted the switch for the fogs in there. It cannot be accessed while driving in this position as the door covers the panel but I don't plan on turning them off but figured easy access to the switch was available so why not? I grounded the switch to the ground available between the gas and brake pedals.



I then moved on to installing the lights in the bumper. I removed the bumper from the car and installed the light housings. Refer to Bumper Removal & Horn Replacement It is remarkably easy to remove.

You will need 6 additional screws to mount the lights (3 each side). I used self tapping screws the exact same size as the stock ones. They screwed right into the mounting holes.

I then finished running the wiring to each fog light location. I made sure to zip tie everything up and out of the way. Be sure to tie it high enough it will be above the splash guard to better protect it.

I hung the bumper cover back on and got under the car and plugged the connectors into the bulbs. I put the bolts and plastic retaining clips back in the bumper and splash guards and everything was good to go.

As you can see I also wrapped the lights in yellow vinyl to add to the look. I need to grab some better shots but I think this gives you an idea.


Side Note:
The bulbs included in my lights were an 881 bulb but my pigtails even though sold as 881 Pigtails were actually 880 Pigtails. I tossed the bulbs included in the lights and used the 880s. It's a direct fit. The only difference is the 881 is a 90* angle from the bulbs and the 880 is a straight shot out. There is no issue with the difference in bulb. The only thing remotely close to interfering is the wiper fluid container.

An Additional Note:

I decided not to go with the multifuntion switch with the fog lights to help cut costs and honestly, I don't feel a need for it.

However, I was looking thru the KGIS and came across this diagram.


It looks to me that all you'd have to do is add an additional pin (if non existent) into the #5 & #6 position. When the switch is turned to turn the fogs on it will create continuity between pin #5 & #6. All you'd have to do then is figure out which wire from the relay to hook to what.


EDIT:

I have bee receiving several PM's lately about some confusion over wiring the harness. Hopefully the following picture can help clear some of that confusion up. One person did ask about using the HID wiring harness from DDM. This all will be the same except there probably won't be a switch in the mix here. Very easy to add on. I'm waiting for them to provide a photo of it so I can see the wiring. I want to make sure I'm correct on what's included before I put together a wiring diagram for it.

I don't trust butt connectors. I've seen them fall out too often. The add-a-circuit even comes with a butt connector preattached and I still cut it off and soldered.

Should be relatively the same. A member here name Linear did a How To on the Koup. Have a look around for it.

Nothing. It's just a hole in the firewall. Nothing attached to the front or back of it.

I added a note regarding the multifunction switch and the possibility of making it work. IMO a little too much trouble just for a stock look but if someone wants to tackle it, more power to them.

Been getting a few questions lately regarding the wiring so I figured I'd throw this together.

but while i got all parts ready and right before i try to do the installation. i figure "the hole in the firewall with a plate" dont actually exist on my 2011 model sedan (it's sealed, no hole been drilled thru from factory).

so now i'm stuck and still trying to figure how and where to run the wire thru the firewall. any suggestions?

Just find a boot or grommet and slide it thru w/ something else. Possible thing that come to mind are the hood release cable. Don't recall how accessible that grommet it but there are some available. You could always drill a hole and install a grommet as well.

Sooo, followed your instructions. Everything worked out well except in the on position for the switch, the fogs come on by themselves with tail lights still off. When I turn the tail lights on..the fogs turn off. I'm thinking I wired the switch backward? If so, should i just reverse the order of the wires?
