Default DIY OEM Spoiler Install #1M034-AD01

My apologies if anyone has posted a DIY on this spoiler before, did some searching and it seems everyone either had their's dealer installed or installed by a bodyshop...I paid about 225$ for the spoiler itself and had a friend paint it (I work in a bodyshop), total install time approx. 2hrs...So here it goesss!

Order spoiler- Kia Part #1M034-AD01
It comes primered so a quick paint job and your ready to go!

First remove cover on inside of trunk and layout drill templates on top of the trunk

Tape templates down to trunk

Using a SMALL drillbit, drill pilot holes for the left and right-hand sides (I used a 1/8 bit i believe) Try to stay in the center of the crosshair!

Using a unibit, drill trunk to specified witdths for all five holes (4 holes 5/16'', 1 hole 3/8'') I taped off the next larger size to ensure not drilling too wide. Make sure to use some touch-up paint or self etching primer to paint the bare metal!!!

Next, carefully check to make sure the spoiler lines up correctly (Don't mind the engine/trans assembly in the background )

Now this part is a PITA...Remove the spoiler and fish the wire for the brake light through the center to the left foot of the wing...I just pushed it through and used a pick to pull the wires out...Install the gaskets on both feet of the spoiler and the grommet supplied into the trunk in the larger (3/8'') hole for the wiring...Bolt the brake light in and the wing to the trunk. (Sorry no pics )

Next route the brake light wires down the left trunk lid hinge along the factory wires...Use a supplied sticky foam pad along the inside of the hole where the wires go through.

Now take the wires and fish them underneath the rear parcel shelf...A clothes hanger and some tape will do

Lastly, use the supplied connector and pulg it in to the existing 3rd brake light socket (disabling the factory brake light), tuck the wires underneath the parcel shelf...Black wire goes to the existing black wire, green goes to red...Re-install trunk cover and enjoy your new looks!!

very nice looking ride. I've always found it too painful to drill into my car.
Glad to see you got the courage :P

I installed an OE style spoiler on my sedan this past weekend. I was going to do a write up on it but CopueWithA"K"'s post really outlined everything.

The drilling templets incuded with my spoiler were terrible when compared to what CopueWithA"K" was supplied. Still, they worked. In my case they were strips of cardboard with holes in the middle. I taped them onto the bottom of the spoiler with the holes lined up. I then placed the spoiler on the deck lid where I wanted it. With mine, the spoiler could be placed anywhere. I then taped the templet strips to the deck lid and lifted the spoiler up. The strips stick to the deck lid.

I probably would have been better off making my own templet.

Drill a pilot hole and then a larger hole. In my case the hole was inside the deck lid reinforcement. I did not want to use a long bolt with the head sticking out so I drilled an access hole in the support. The screw could then be inserted inside of the reinforement.

The wiring was the pain but only because I was an idiot. I first ran the wire down to the brake light. Long story short, this did not work as the brake light would not work when the headlights were on. I then read some post from here and realized I was making this more difficult then was needed... the access to the 3rd brake like in the car is right in the trunk. I taped into those wires and everything was good. I left the orginal brake light connected to it lights up as well.

I now get 60mph, the car has 10x the traction and the radio is louder.

(I still need to clean up the holes)

Awesome writeup. I must say, as much as I like the spoiler, i love the wheels. Kia should definitely should have made color matching those parts of the wheels to the car itself. It adds so much to it!

Looks good!...I was suprised when I got the spoiler from Kia because it came with everything needed to install...Even higher tension bars to open the trunk...I'm guessing that is an aftermarket oem spoiler??

Thanks!...I couldn't agree with you more on the wheel inserts!...They could make a killing on them!

Yes... and while it is very nice and I like it, it would have been _much_ better with templates like yours came with. The tension bars would have be nice. But on the other hand mine was $85 plus $70 to paint so I'm certainly not complaining. The spoiler itself is really very nice.

It really "makes" the car.

I didn't have the incentive or desire to drill into my trunk lid until I read this thread. Thank you CopueWithA"K" and tcope for the excellent job. I went and ordered a pre-painted spoiler off ebay ( Kia Forte 4D 10-11 Factory OEM Style Spoiler PAINTED ) for $120 with shipping. Ordered on Sunday, arrived and installed Friday night. Because of you guys, the install went smoothly. I new what to expect from beginning to end. I had primer and touch-up paint to seal the edges of the drilled holes, blue threadlocker to make sure the screws didn't back out, and a fresh tube of RTV to seal everything up on top, and to seal the "access holes" in the inner trunk skin. For a pre-painted spoiler, the paint is an excellent match. It makes a difference in the look of the rear end.
