Default Taillight tint laws in texas?

So instead of being pulled over for texting or speeding, I get pulled over for my tail light tint. Oh yeah, that cop is sooooo smart. Damn him, well with my luck I got away with a warning, but I thought as long as you brake and you can see that the lights are red from a distance of 1000ft you should be fine? I honestly don't understand, even the cop was confused!!! Can someone help me out here and shed some light on this issue?

I don't know about Texas but in florida your tail lights (not your brake lights) have to be able to be seen from 900 feet. Check with your local Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

i lived in texas before getting stationed in Idaho. in Texas its illegal. no matter how dark, or light. some cops will let it go, but others will give you a ticket, and give you X amount of days to get it removed.

I got pulled over about a month ago for speeding in Grapevine and the cop didn't say anything about my tinted tail lights. Mine are pretty dark, but I keep my lights on during the day and you can clearly see the blinkers and brake lights. I was actually on my way home from the tint shop where I got them put on.
