I live near Boston and I enjoy it here. I'm not sure if you have much snow in South Africa but the winters in Massachusetts can get a little hectic. Boston is very much like a European city. There's a lot of walking, biking and the way Boston was built and how the roads are resemble European city-like features. I've spent a lot of time in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic and Boston really does have that European vibe to it. It's truly unlike any other city in the United States. The great thing about the United States is you DON'T have to stay in one place. So if you end up moving to California or Texas and you don't like it there you can leave. If you do plan to come maybe live in Boston you will have seasonal weather, New Hampshire hiking and mountains not too far up north, very good sea food, very sports oriented city (Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, Bruins), lots of walking in Boston, you will experience the "T" which is the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (Subway, buses, trains) I don't know why but Massachusetts calls their state transportation the "T" and overall Massachusetts has the attitude that we're the best state in the United States. Also life is faster paced up in Boston than it would be down south in Texas. You will notice culturally that the north has a faster paced mentality than the south. The south is more relaxed where as the north is more uptight. In the end Boston is a city that is worth checking out. Most of all, good luck!
Boston def resembles a Eurpoean city in layout AND mentality, lol. It's beautiful up in New England, not too crowded, full of history, and Boston has some ritzy jobs on offer. Or, if you want really open, try Concord, NH. It's small for a state capital, but beautiful with many opportunities. Your near the coast, the mountains, and many scenic parks and historical landmarks. It never gets too warm here, the hottest might be 90F for a day or two, and always something to do. You have 4-5 states all within a 3-4 hour drive, and Canada is only about 4-5hrs away.
That's def NOT a suggestion I was expecting to see. IMO, from much experience working in and around Baltimore, avoid it. It's a shit hole. I'm not a fan of MD really at all. Only thing keeping me here is family. Then again, most of my opinions are based off of the politics in this VERY Democratic state.
I guess any city can have it's bad eggs, but Baltimore has a rotten carton of eggs. A very minute display of culture mostly muffled by the crime, filth, & pollution.
One city I spend a ittle time in and liked a lot is Charlotte, NC. Very clean and friendly. Still some bad but less than many others. That's not a suggestion to live there though. That's a tough decision. Your best bet is to travel and don't limit yourself to one area until you know you like it. When you get to the right spot you will know that's the place to call home.
LOL, its sad but a bit too true. There are a few nice parts, but they get so overshadowed by the dumps.
STAY AWAY FROM NYC......everything is over priced! I say Texas. A lot cheaper and nicer people!!
+2 on Texas. Much better cost of living, nicer climate. NY is nice but super expensive. The younger population where I live is thinning out because no one can afford to buy houses here, etc, so everyone is moving out of state. Best not to start here. Good place if you wanted to visit though. lol
Thanks guys, so far I've narrowed it down to Jacksonville/Miaimi, Florida OR Dallas, Texas - all the reviews I've read have been really positive and these places have an affordable cost of living, great climate, etc. Im only 22 years old so finding a place that caters a bit more to that, would be ideal.
Another question I have is - on average what kind of hourly rate/weekly wage could I expect to get? I know its gonna be difficult to find a job but I just need all the info I can get in order to better prepare myself for how much money i'll need to get through each day.
I really appreciate all the help you guys have given
HAHA Canada is nice, if you can deal with the strangest weather

You can look up min wage for each state as well as the average cost of living, but the wages you will earn depend on what kind of job, experience, special skills, etc...
I know here min wage is going to be $9.06. I believe as of the 1st of 2012.

Hey everybody, after 5 long months of planning and organising I've finally got everything booked and im ready to go!
I settled on starting off in Jacksonville, Florida for a while then im hoping to move around from there. I fly out on the 23rd of Jan to New York and then I gotta catch a connecting flight across to Jacksonville. Im super stoked to finally have everything sorted and finalised, a few more days and im ready to fly!
Thanks to everyone for the info and advice, its been a huge help for me! I'll check in on the forums once I land.
I like Florida Make sure you check out Disney World and Universal Orlando. If that is there names that is lol. BTW Minimum wage in VA is $7.25 lol
