Hi all, I'm getting a check engine light so I checked it with my Cen-Tech CAN OBDII checker. I'm getting:
PO455 EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Large)
PO449 System Vent VLV/SOL
I'm planning to take it straight to the dealer tomorrow (Under Warranty) What should I expect? It sounds serious. Should I be worried? Is it safe to drive to the dealer? (10 Miles) Thanks, Jim
Three years or so is early for an actual evap system problem, but OTOH it's also not impossible. Any chance that someone either overfilled or left the cap loose at the last fill-up? Either of those things can cause evap codes to be set. No problem driving to the dealer, but you might want to try first clearing the codes and wait to see if they show up again, assuming there are no performance problems in addition to the CEL.
Hi kiaguy007, thanks. I tried to reset the codes but they won't accept the erase command.
My wife was driving the car and she is very careful never to overfill it, and I just checked the cap and it was not loose. She did fill it up today however.
I wish I had a serial port on my computer. I would like to make sure I have the latest software update on my Cen-Tech. It is acting a little flakey. I have a USB to serial cable, but it ends up with female and my Cen-Tech cable is female also. :frown2:
I guess I'll just take it to the dealer in the morning. Thanks again, Jim
There is a Solenoid down with the Vapour Canistor , if that is stuck open you will get a code . can check there if the hoses are off or in need of replacement.
The dealer couldn't find anything. They just cleared the code and sent me home with the invitation, "If it comes back, come on in". Thanks a lot. :smile2:
EVAP codes are difficult to asses , but saying that there are only so many components it can be , so dealer probably checked the hoses the valve on the evap cannister and cleared the code and said be on your way and if it comes back on they will probably change the vent valve on the cannister as a next step .
The CEL came back... suprise!!! I got a different scanner at a Pawn Shop, an Innova 3100a. I was able to update the software on this one. The Cen-Tech was flaky.
The code was the same but the text was more informative: PO449 Evaporative emission system vent control circuit intermittent
The Freeze Frame showed: Fuel Sys 2 CL-FAULT
Everything else on the FF looked normal.
I was not able to erase the code.
I guess I'll go back to the dealership again tomorrow morning. Maybe they will change the vent valve on the cannister this time.
Purge valve or its harness/connector. No big deal for driveability. Just have it attended to when ya can spare the moment.
For anyone else with a gross/major/large/minor/small evap leak code that is not fixed by re installing/replacement of fuel cap, just get it smoke tested if its on your dime and not the dealers. It is way cheaper in the long run than throwing the parts at it. As incog said...these can be tricky to self diagnose. Lots going on to work through. Even a detailed DTC can leave you with several things to try and r&r.
