Not buying it. Have no doubt it was something else that caused this. The radio simply does not have the programming to do anything like modify anything on the phone.
Yea i dont see how the bluetooth would be able to do this but i'm no expert. It has the same functionality as a bluetooth headset so i feel as if you would here about problems like this all the time.
What kind of phone do you have? Most smartphones like an android back it all up.

I have all my contacts on an Exchange server, my Google account, and another backup. If you have a Google account and are signed into it on your phone, it should backup your contacts, unless you turned it off. I'm not sure how to get the backup, but I know you can.

If it's an Android phone and it's set to sync Contacts it will update your Gmail account with your contacts. When it syncs again it will pull all of the Contact info from Gmail and add them to the phone again.
Look how long i've been a member. It did happen. I've used it for a very long time, my job is within my car on a military base. I have used it for almost 2 years now.
What occured is as follows: My car is turned off and on very frequently. Apparently the car was turned off while downloading the phonebook (the stupid 'transfer complete' message you always get) and it just wiped the phonebook instead. It left ALL OTHER FORMS OF DATA. My phone is only a Samsung Solstice. Its about 15 months old. It has still worked fine and held all numbers put in thereafter, and I have not turned the bluetooth back on.
I didnt use a backup service, thats my own fault, but I didnt expect to lose my numbers to the car.
ALSO- TO THE MODERATOR- i had meant to post all of this in the Sedan forum, and i guess i was in the 2.0 forum on another tab and was using that tab to post.
The car isnt just a bluetooth like a headset, as your headset doesnt have voice communication software nor does it access your phonebook like the car does. With the car's access to the phonebook, it is entirely possible some error can occur during the retrieval of the phonebook from your phone.

Not really. The car bluetooth doesn't have Admin rights to Write to the phone book. It only has the right to read. It happening while downloading the phone book is just coincidence. I've turned mycar off 100x before the "transfer complete" message w/ no issue.
Sucks it happened, but goes to show you should have backup in place.
In my BMW you could add and delete contacts from the actual phone using voice command, meaning it was granted full access. I only have the stock head on my forte and haven't played around with the Optima navigation yet to see if it has the same rights.
Freak accidents do happen sadly since technology is still prone to human error by programing.
