When this poll first came out I said no. But it has since happened a few times. I believe in all cases that the car had not reached full operating temperature. I hope a computer flash update is announced soon. Obviously there is a problem.

Luckily I found this thread... This freaked me out. It was really a bad thing since I was in traffic. Slowing down, then accelerating and SLAM! The car tries to fly out from under you from 2nd to 3rd gear...

I've had mine almost two weeks and have less than 700 miles on it. I've been to the dealer 3 times about paperwork/prepwork after purchasing and well... it's an hour drive... Kinda hard to keep miles off your car with the closest dealer so far away.

I read that one person said it's a defective transmission? How can I show them the problem... it's nearly impossible to reproduce at will. It's happened 4 times... (TWICE today)

Anyone else experiencing an issue where it won't upshift to first?

I left the dealer this morning, and they were unable to "duplicate the problem" so I was told they couldn't do anything about it. I explained how it is completely random but the people at the desk just handle paperwork, of course. I had to work my way around to actually speaking with the tech and after explaining the problem in more detail he told me that there is a similar known issue with the 2.0L but not the 2.4. And until the tech can catch whatever code is thrown when the car slips/slams into gear... they can't do anything.

So... I left. As soon as I got home, I stopped at a store. Leaving, I put it in reverse, then into drive... pressed the accelerator and I got nothing but a nice RPM raise. Checked to see if it was in Drive, and it was... even on the dash. Pressed it a few more times and it revved to about 1500RPMs and still no movement. I gave it a final press... at about 2200RPMs it slams into first... Not very fun. Especially, when you're riding around with a temp tag and people know it's a brand new car...

I'm assuming there's nothing we can do about this until there is an official TSB or something? This problem is annoying and the dealership is basically calling me a liar every time I show them problems with the car. Like my passenger side door won't close flush with the car... some times. It of course, closed fine with them this morning. I think it has to do with whether the car is on level ground.

I was really confused when you all were trying to explain this slip but honestly it feels more like a jerk. Yes, it has happened to me several times now. First time happened at around maybe 250-300 miles and occasioannly it does it again. Right now my sx is sitting at 1300miles and from the top of my head it has occured atleast three times since the first time. I am really not too concern yet, since i am not too familiar with that damage it may cause to the vehicle a few 1k miles down the road. But anyhow if many Forte Koup owners are complaining and experiancing this issue then obviously thats a problem and needs to be addresed.

Sx forte Sedan with the 2.4L...Wont go into drive from reverse sometimes unless i giggle the stick to get it in. Yes its a manual....and sometimes if I accelerate into the passing gear and let off it wont shift and will start slowing down due to being in the same gear and all of a sudden will shift into the next one....sorta crappy for a new car...thank god for a 100,000mile warranty, but I doubt they will listen to me cause im only 20 and they will prob blame it on me!!

Currently I have not felt any slippage, but in very cold weather I have had very hard shifts from 1st to second occur twice. After the initial shift it does not repeat.

I still haven't had any problems with either my sedan SX or Koup SX but I hate seeing that the poll is dead even with people that have 5-speed autotranny problems.

Everyone with a 5 speed autotranny that is having problems call the 1-80 Kia number and tell them you want to report this problem on your VIN number -- and let them know the dealers are having a hard time duplicating it to get down to a fix. Maybe that will start the discussion where it needs to be -- at Kia.

I have a 2.4L Sedan with 5 sp AT and have had this issue since Nov 2009 when I purchased. It happens only at "moderate" acceleration and it seems to be when I first start out after being parked for a while. It gets to 2000-2500 rpm and then lunges into 3rd. Dealer won't admit anyone else having this issue yet. I will continue to press the issue until they fix it.

I have been in contact with Kia Canada Tech Assist Center on this issue. They are aware of the issue, and there is some progress in determining the cause and subsequent resolution. There may be a glitch in the shift map, somewhere, and finding the exact variables that cause it to surface is a long process. I am doing my part in taking home our diagnostic computer every day, and doing flight records on my entire car while I drive.

It happens to me once every few weeks (2.4L & 5AT), usually after a 20 minute highway stint home, and then a quick dive into the 7-11 for my lotto tickets (aka "My Retirement Plan"). As I leave the store, the first 2-3 shift can be 'hard' and sudden. What I have been able to find so far is that the throttle is not being kicked down, but instead the car is allowing the revs to increase, as the transmission is shifting. Once 3rd engages, revs are high, and the results are neck-jarring. It is inconsistent, non-repeatable, and really frustrating, but we're working on it... hopefully more than a few techs elsewhere are able to also gather info, and we'll be able to submit our data and get this figured out.

KIATECH, thanks for letting people know that there could be an end in sight for this problem.

I have dealt with Japanese companys in the past and I know that even when everyone else knows there is an issue, that until the company's engineers have diagnosed it as a product issue and not an enviromental one (ie, regional, user issue) AND have a soultion, no official recognition will be made.

Funny thing is, I don't think I've expereinced this problem myself, at least not to the extreme level that some have described. I have the 2.4l with 12,000 kms now and no seriuos issues. Maybe I'm just lucky?!

Hi everyone, i know the issue you are experiencing, as I had it too in the first 1000km of my car, 2.4l Forte SX. It went away when my service manager cleared the memory of the car. Apparently the car has an adaptive transmission that learns your style of driving. I would recommend you take your care to your dealership and ask them to reset the adaptive memory of your transmission... worked for me!

Thanks for that info . Kiatech, have speed sensors been tested or replaced? It may be unrelated. If speed sensor is malfunctioning, the PCM will sub a shift value which may be the wrong one, which can cause a soft shift, hard shift.

This is exactly what is happening to my car. Thanks for continuing to work on it. I will be very happy when it can be fixed.

I bought my 2010 in January this year. I have had this occur many times. I have had it to the dealership three times, with no resolution yet. I will continue to bring it in until the fix the problem. Its quite unnerving when you have other people in the car and are telling them how great it is, and then it jerks ....
