Default Issues starting the car. Any advice?

I haven't brought it into the dealer yet but I just wanted to get everyone's opinion. I have a 2011 forte 5 sx AT. It has about 11k on it. Every once and awhile when i start the car the car slowly revs up to about 3000 rpm and the drops back down and when i mean slowly its like a 10 second process. It happened a few times maybe 3 weeks ago and then stopped until just this week when it happened twice more.

Today i drove it in the am. let it sit for about 40 hours and then went to start it and it turned over a few times instead of starting up right away.

Has anybody has similar issues.

Newer cars tend to do that to warm up, pretty normal. I see your in NY so it is probably really cold up there.

Definitely not normal. Go to your dealership as soon as you possibly can. I'm not sure what the issue is but it sounds as if it's electrical seeing how your car loses power. If the issue occurs again, try to smell for something burning. I doubt that it's mechanical seeing how the issue comes and goes and doesn't appear to be consistent. Then again I can't properly diagnose the problem but your dealership can and that's where you definitely should go. You don't want your car to slowly rev up to 1000 RPMs and then drop to 0 RPMs in the middle of a snow storm. Keep us posted on further details!

Mine does this now that it's getting cold. If it's been sitting overnight or for a while, it'll rev up to about 2k before slowly coming back down. If it's only been sitting say an hour or two, it'll immediately come back down to around 500-1k.

Its called an automatic choke...when the car is cold and is first started up it revs up to a RPM range that it can warm up to operating temp faster. once it reaches that temp, it slowly comes back down to idle. this is completely normal on just about all newer cars. and being that you are in a northern state where it tends to be colder explains why it is reving to a higher RPM in order to reach operating temp faster. hope this helps....

If you all say so.. I haven't touched an automatic in over 3 years so if you're all confident in diagnosing the issue as, an "automatic choke" then so be it.

My brothers 2010 ex does that.. not necessarily to 3k RPM but it goes up to about 2300 and comes back down after 25 seconds when it's warmed up a bit.

I too thought it was the cold. When it almost didnt start it was just under 40. not really that cold imo. The first to times the car reved up it was parked in my garage. not heated but not that cold. The most recent time it reved up it was almost 60 outside

I don't think it even has to be cold. The first start up of the day it will rev higher just to warm up. If you turn it on throughout the day it doesn't do that anymore. I've owned 2 cars before this one and it's the same thing. It's just to warm up nothing wrong in my opinion

The most resent few times was in the middle of the day after i already drove it to work. so it was sitting about 4 hours. since i have hard the car it has probably only done it 6 or so times and i start it at least 4 times a day.

its not really technically an auto choke since it isn't carbureted but it is to warm up the engine as far as I know. nothing to do with an auto trans though. My car does it first thing in the morning and I have a manual.

From what I understand he is saying it revs to 3k slowly. Not up to 3k and slowly coming down. The slight rev and drop is normal, it is to get the engine to operating temp more easily. As for it reving up slowly and turning over poorly, try a new battery. The stock ones suuuuuck.
