Regarding your theory about the leak possibly being around the bolt threads: My dealer told me (in response to earlier speculations) that the factory-specified procedure is to apply sealant to the block's bolt-hole threads. EDIT: I took a look at the service manual, and it does indeed say to apply the liquid gasket to the threads. Very strange.

Thanks for your input, guys.
so there is no problem now ?
that leak is just some kind of liquid that the dealer apply for fixing ?

Aqrab, I appreciate the thread bumps. The engine is currently leaking engine oil slightly at the oil pan seam and around a few pan bolts.

This doesn't seem likely, but is the crankcase breather working properly? After looking at KGIS, it appears to be a fairly simple system with a PCV valve and hoses from the crankcase and then to the intake. If pressure is building up, you could get leakage from any areas that are not perfectly sealed. This was a problem with E39 5 series BMW's and their bizarre crankcase ventilation system that would clog up. Oil would start coming out all over the place.

Another good point, Walpole. Thank you - I hadn't considered that possibility.

I agree with you that the bolt holes are probably too deep and may be the cause. The fact that the factory repair manual specifies sealant in the bolt holes(!) underscores this possibility. I've never heard of a factory manual specify using sealant in this manner.

I'm not aware of any 2.0's leaking. I assume it's a 2.4.

Keep an eye on it. If it weren't for me actually seeing it drip I never would have known. Check the passenger rear side of the pan at the joint. It conveniently drips right into a plastic shield so it never hits the ground.

My dealer got back to me and I've set up an appointment for another attempt at fixing the leak.

Kia Tech support is having the dealer repair the leak again - this time they're having the dealer use Loctite 5900H sealant. Apparently the Loctite product has the same properties as the Permatex "Right Stuff" (ie high pressure resistance). The dealer is planning on keeping the car for a day or two; they want to drain the engine as completely as possible and really allow the sealant to cure before refilling the oil pan.

My dealer is familiar with "The Right Stuff" sealant and was actually considering using it, but neither they nor I want to set up any potential warranty hassles. In case anyone is interested, here's a technical PDF for the Loctite sealant:

http://www.rshughes.com/images/produ...WxTnQdHZsw.pdf

I'll be sure to let you guys know if this stuff solves the problem.

EDIT: I'm going to mention the possibility of over-pressurization in the sump. When I look again at the picture I posted, the spattering on surrounding parts looks like the oil has lightly sprayed from the joint (or somewhere around there).
