TweetCan I install subs and an amp without voiding warranty?
I really want to add a few subs and an amp to my Koup, but I wasn't sure about the warranty. What if I install them, and a stock speaker or two blow out, will they still be under warranty?
It all depends on how strict your dealership is. Some dealerships are more lenient than others. I have a system in my Koup and my dealership has mentioned nothing of it but they have asked if I've added any performance mods to my car. If something fails due to your aftermarket system then your warranty will not cover the damages. To be honest, if you blow your stock speakers I wouldn't even bother replacing them via warranty. I would buy aftermarket speakers, very likely Alpine speakers and they aren't that expensive.
^ Website my friends and I use. I recommend onlinecarstero.com and amazon.com for purchasing stereo equipment. I also recommend Best Buy for installing your system if you don't have the time to do it yourself. Check the ratings on your Best Buy if you're thinking of having them do the work.
Your warranty will only be void if what you add/modify affects what got damaged from what I understand.
If you add an amplifier that hook up to your stock speakers and blow them Kia will not warranty them.

all depends on the dealership.
mine for example has a bunch of ...... how should i put it nicely......... actually i have nothing nice to say about them.
here's the story, several days after having my stereo put in i was on my way to work. same route as usual, same bumps on the road as usual. all of a sudden my speedometer stops working. so after work i dropped by the dealership to see what the problem was. their response, you probably unplugged something behind the cluster when the deck was pulled. as it was done at a different location i went back had them pull the deck and check all connections. verdict: everything is connected, speedo still doesn't work. so next day i go back to the dealer and say that there were nothing loose behind the cluster. their response: ok, then it's probably the gauge cluster, we have just replaced another one that went. me: ok, when can you take a look at it.
luckily they had time then and i was in no rush. about 2 hours go by and i get hit with a $170 bill. for what i ask, was there anything wrong with the stereo install that caused this? them: no, there was a loose connection on top of the transmission. me: ok, shouldn't this be covered under warranty since i haven't even had the car for a year. them: it would be, but we have to assume that it was unplugged while the stereo was being put in, and was not plugged in securely afterwards since its only been 3-4 days since the stereo was installed and NOW your speedo stops working.
so i went to another kia dealer and asked them to take a look at it to see if there was any way that the plug on the transmission would be unplugged during the install due to location of the plug ( drivers side, bottom side of the engine where the tranny is, under all the air intake and rad hoses). their mechanic was really surprised that the loose plug that i just paid $170 for was loose, after i had been told it was fixed. i mean what did i pay for??? shouldn't a simple diagnostic read out a code that would specify where the fault is???
i took the evening to gather my thoughts and called kia canada the next day. explained the story to them. answer: you need to get a second opinion. as i already did that i explained that mechanics at another dealership can not see a way that this plug would have been disconnected. answer: you should have gone to that dealership first to get everything checked as we have to go by the first mechanics diagnosis.
hopefully noone got lost in what i was trying to say...
but anyways, now i am out $170 and kia canada won't answer my questions... so yeah... check with your dealership
p.s. i will attach a few pics of the location of the loose plug in question
I am adding a 10'' sub woofer and an amp. And, I was told from a buddy that the only way dealership can void my warranty is if my sub/amp caused the issue. So, I guess its safe to install the sub/amp.
One question.. How does blowing our stock speakers have anything to do with installing a sub? Your stock speakers wouldn't get any extra abuse, if anything they would take less. Most people like to crank the bass of stock systems.. Once a sub is installed you don't need to add any bass because the sub will do that. So how would you be blowing speakers? You wouldn't even need the volume up as high with subs.

As long as it was wired correctly yes, your right. But not evrybody does it the right way. There are a lot of hacks out there that think they know how to do it.

yep, Just turn down the bass in your cd player's settings, the sub(s) will add all the bass you need. How ever if you listen to alot of dubstep/electronic/heavy metal, needs more tweaking as i find the stock speakers cant handle the distortion. then consider after market speakers
