Guys, I am planning to get this installed on my koup:
Engine start button

I wanted to know, has anyone done this mode of their rides?
How easy of a mod is it?
Do I need any other hardware to install it on a 1.6 SX?
Is there anything to feel concerned about? Like security, does it mean anyone can start your engine and off they go...???

I havent personally done a mod like this but typically, with an Engine Start/Stop system, you have to either have the key within like 5-10 feet of the car or actually IN the ignition for the car to start.

So does it mean that on top of installing the items listed above I will need to get other stuffs installed to detect the keys are within range? Not sure I understand how this is supposed to work. Many those having the 2011 forte wit Start Button can advise?

The stock push button start is a smart key system. It recognizes the key is within range and will only start the engine then. You can add just a push button start and have the button activated when you put the key in the ignition....but that kind of defeats the purpose, no?

Also, not sure where you live but here in Canada our steering wheels lock if the car is attempted to start without the key, that's something to look into as you may have to purchase a module that simulates your key chip to trick the car into thinking there is a key in the ignition.

There's a lot of question marks and i'd suggest talking to your dealer or a company that has installed these before.

last time I saw an aftermarket start button, it still need the key to turn on the battery. the button was just to bypass the "start position" of the key

so it was useless

Yeah pretty useless I guess... So if I understand well I probably need to get a new steering wheel, some additional kits to detect the smart key then this push button...

I just thought that this would have been an easy mod but it does not seem to be that easy after all.

Jarret: I'm in Mauritius so dealer here is not experienced nor keen to get after market stuffs installed. I am still waiting for my EC mirror from them but it could as well never come...

For info: here we have the 5 speed 1.6 EX without any of the following (EC mirror, Mood Lights, Tire pressure indicator). So I am trying to get some mods on my Koup... without much success so far...

I think this is a more comprehensive kit, however since am a newbie in device electronics seems to be a pain for me to get this installed by myself....

that looks better. As you can see they have the immobilizer bypass box that i was talking about. There are companies that do push-button starts too...i think bulldog is one company. If you plan on going that route that might be an option.

Or have it professionally/dealer installed.

That looks really interesting...I at one point was considering ordering the parts from Kia but that would be bloody expensive. I really am wondering about this though. Who is going to be the first to try.

I have one going in my car basically you can pop the cylinder and stick it to on. this will free up both keys so you can still use them. then you can also hold on to the old cylinder so that if you sell the car you can restore it. its a pain in the but but if you want a funcinal push button its one way to do it withought debouching a key.

Just make sure whoever is doing the install knows what they're doing. There's a lot of things that can go wrong with the installation of a push button start. As jarret_g mentioned, manufacturers put fail-safes in place to prevent the car from being started without a key in the ignition. So you have to follow almost the same procedure as a remote start system and bypass those fail-safes. Too bad you didnt wait a year... push button start & smart key are an option on the 2011
