Regardless of what's happening at Kia, I won't be surprised if no spare becomes the norm in the future for all car companies. Trimming cost/weight is of primary concern and no spare helps both of these. I'm sure that some company will try to make a marketing gimmick out of the fix-a-flat -- remember when VW made the ads about full-sized spares?

Tire Mobility Kit != Spare

The dealer I bought from said the spares will be optional equipment in the coming years, with the "tire mobility kit" being the standard.

The '12 LX I just picked up had a spare. That was the deciding factor for me to go with the Forte.

No spare tire in your new car? Four things you need to know.

You're cruising along in your new car, when bang, there's a flat tire. You do everything youíre supposed to do: Safely maneuver to the side of the road, turn on your hazard lights, lift the hood to indicate car trouble, and open the trunk to get the spare. And itís not there! In an effort to decrease vehicle weight, increase fuel economy, and allow for more trunk space, manufacturers have been replacing full-size spare tires with smaller, temporary ones. Now, even these are disappearing in some models in favor of a tire repair kit the size of a shoebox. Donít have a spare tire in your trunk? Here are four things you need to know:

The 2012 Forte has a spare tire, but the 2012 Rio has the fix-a-flat/compressor. An actual spare tire is an option on the Rio.
