Rear Suspension sway

Hi guys!
Got a 2016 Forte 4-door with 36K mi. Gorgeous! I really love the car. It thinks is a full-sized Buick thats allergic to gasoline. BUT there is a problem. When I hit a bump with the right rear wheel, the rear end jumps to the right. If I happen to be bearing to the left and hit a bump, it's much worse. the "faster the worser!" In fact, I really think if I were to hit the right kind of bumps at interstate speeds, I'd lose control crash, burn and die (in that order). Took it to the dealer twice, but they just did an alignment both times just to blow smoke up my butt, but otherwise, think I'm crazy. Anyone else out there have this problem?

You need to install a rear torsion bar to eliminate this annoying rear end hop. I no longer experience this at all. This was one of the best improvements I've made to my car.

All Forte's with rear torsion beam experience that.


Yes, you can add torsion bar as it helps. But a bit. It does NOT completely make the problem go away. Some stiffening the the front help as well. Some even go to the extent of coilovers...

However, it will not make it as good as independent suspension. Similar issues have Elantra GT. Yet, with their line - GT Sport has independent suspension and it changes the characteristics a lot.




So... I simply gave up. I did not do any suspension mods. I just learnt how to live with that.
And actually I like it to some extent. It reminds me of older cars where suspension was way worse than nowadays and you actually had to be on the look out all the time whenever you would push metal to the metal.




But yes - this is "normal". And it is worse with lower profile tires, like SX (225/40x18).

I disagree. The rear torsion bar I added to my Forte5 makes it drive like a completely different car. The rear end is soooooo much more stable now. I no longer fear hitting bumps in turns. The front strut bar I added makes the car more stable at high speed, too, but it was the rear torsion bar that made the most improvement.

Yes, it ads a lot, but still not making it like independet suspension.
I had the pleasure to test drive two Elantras as I knew about the rear suspension difference: the GT on 17" (beam) and GT Sport on 18" (independent).
Man, it was a huge difference. No torsion bar can make it up.


You just feel it is so great, because... original is so bad.

Fair enough. You're right about it not being like an independent suspension, but for my car it really made a huge improvement, and that's what I was looking for. The benefit is easily worth the price.

I also have 16" wheels with BF Goodrich G-Force Comp-2 A/S tires, which are also a big upgrade from the crappy oem tires I had.

But nothing compares to a real sports car like my Z.

While I have it up in the air for the torsion bar, I was also considering adding new rear shocks, (car now has 37K miles on it) possibly heavy duty, to help minimize the chatter from that right rear wheel, whaddyathink?

Yeah, it's really weird how it goes from: "Man! I love this car!" on a decent surface to: "I can NOT continue driving this piece of crap!" after hitting the "right kind" of bump. It feels like the rear end on the car jumps a foot to the right.

I only like "unpredictable" for movies. I've driven literally EVERYTHING that moves since 1959 (including locomotives) and I'll take "predictable" any day of the week! I'll bet you like getting a root canal, dontchya? Yeah, you do!

torsion bar again

Just got my oil change, new wiper blades and tire rotation today, and the service dude sed they would install it for nothin' if I bought it. No biggie; only four bolts. Now all I need is 200 bananas.
