Hey all, I have a 2014 Kia forte ex that won't start, at first I thought it might be the starter. I took the air box, and throttle body off to access the starter, but I haven't got around to completing it, so the car sat for a bit. The other day I went out to work on it, and it started right up without the throttle body on it, I put the throttle body back on, and it wouldn't start again, so I figured it's the throttle body. Today I went and got a different throttle body, put it on, and it won't start again, I took it off, and it still won't start. Anyone have an idea what's going on ?

Are you pluging in the wire harness, things that connects to the throttle body? I've forgotten sometimes to plug it back in.

Make sure the new throttle body is oem/factory, if it's not, you'll definitely have problems.

Do you have an OBD 2 scanner? It would help you to see what's causing the throttle bodies to not function.

Don't throw your old (original) throttle body. Clean the soot/carbon deposits with carb cleaner. You can use brake/parts cleaner. I've used one of the 3 & they don't hurt the throttle body. I even use W4D0. Any of those with a clean rag & a toothbrush/small paint brush. Also WD40 is a good hand cleaner.

When it sat for a while & it started right up. Did it stay on & idled as manufactured or did you turn off engine before knowing for sure?

Check to see if the battery is still good. 1st & easiest thing to check then go down the list (process of elimination) to find the cause & fix it.

It can be a bunch of things to cause an a vehicles engine not to start & turn on.

Battery, spark plugs (their gap/correct type) spark plug coils, fuel, fuel pump, fuses/relays.

It sayed on when I started it, I removed, and reinstalled the throttle body twice and each time the car only ran when the throttle body is off, the battery, and spark plugs were replaced a couple months prior.

When you say it doesn't start are you saying that it will crank but not fire up, or it won't crank at all?

Okay, that shouldn't have anything at all to do with the throttle body or spark plugs. The only reason I can think of that messing with the throttle body would have any affect at all is if you were somehow moving the wires going to the starter in the process. If all you are getting is a click, that means the starter solenoid doing its job but the starter motor is not turning. That also means that the ignition switch and starter relay are working. The possible causes here could be the starter itself, a bad battery cable, a bad battery or poor connection at the battery terminals. Since it seems from your description that the issue is intermittent, I would look closer at the starter and the connections at both ends of both battery cables. Check to make sure they are both tight at both ends and there is no corrosion. If those check out, pull the starter and have it tested.
