New to the site but not the Forte...

This Mod is the same for the sedan and koup.

If you haven't noticed, the brake lights are the outer tail lights (and third center light). The inner two tail lights are just on when you turn the lights on. A fairly easy mod is to make the two inner tail lights function as brake lights too. This helps to insure the people behind you get full warning you are slowing down...:)

The inner light bulbs are already 1157 bulbs -- each has 2 filaments (same as the outer tail light bulbs) and the bulb's socket is made for a 2-filament bulb. You just need to insert a contact in each socket and run an 18 gauge wire from the left brake light wiring, follow the existing wire loom to the trunk lid, and then to each inner tail light socket. So far I have had to modify the contacts by grinding them down to fit the small hole of the socket. Aftermarket contacts and wrecking yard finds are too big and need to be ground smaller. The correct contacts themselves are not available over the counter -- you can by a new outer tail light socket and remove the 2 contacts.

I have accomplished this mod on my SX sedan and Koup SX and have had no problems.

I have the LED 1157R replacement bulbs in my Koup too but not sure I like them. Their light is concentrated in the center so the whole light doesn't look lit. From the rear it looks like I have 4 small tail lights at night.

My feable attempt at drawing this mod out:

http://www.forteforums.com/forums/m...hopefully-drawing-my-paint-attempt-clear.html

The owners manual says to take your car to the dealer if you need to change an outer tail light bulb. The tail light housing is held in by three 10MM nuts. Once they are removed you can carefully remove the housing. Push on the studs from inside the trunk -- don't pry on the housing! the black inner trunk lid cover is held on by black plastic retainers -- screw the centers out with a phillips screwdriver. Once all the retainers are out be careful...it will practically fall off...

One thing you might want to consider before doing this mod - it may be considered a safety feature to have only half of the rear light go bright when the brakes are applied. Say you were looking away when the brakes were applied and didn't see them come on, the difference in intensity between halves might serve to make you realize the brakes had been applied where a uniformly bright whole light might not if you didn't see the intensity change happen. I realize that the the third brake light would also be a clue, but it could be burned out...

Just a little speculation on my part.

Anyone have a Spectra they did this to? Mine are out and need to fix. Cannot find socket anywhere. Any idea's? Links?

Thanks
Check on streetkiaz.com lots of spectra knowledge there! If it has not already been covered post a new thread on your question. Only person on here that I know has a spec is @KoupqueeN maybe she knows. She is also a member on the other Forum I mentioned.
