Hi All,

Today I drove on some pretty bad ice for the first time really since getting the car. When I would brake somewhat hard (happened twice) there was almost a crunching noise (no, it wasnt the snow or ice crunching). Is this to do with the stability control, or some other feature?

Sorry for the vague post, just wondering if anyone knows what I am on about.

It's the ABS for the brakes and it seems to be common with everyone else including myself..

ABS, its supposed to feel that way.
Yes, that's correct.
What you're hearing/feeling the the brakes pulsing off/an on very quickly to give as much stopping force as possible with locking up the wheels. KIATECH, a member here, can probably tell you in more detail than I can, what's involved with ABS braking.

It almost seems it makes thing worse as it locks up the wheels. Maybe its just something I need to get used to.

In fact the wheels do not lock up. They lock and unlock really fast. If they were to lock completely you would simply just slide through the snow/ice.

Get used to this because ABS can save your life.

You feel like they're locking up but they're really not. If they locked up you'd have no control, but with ABS you're still able to control the car with breaks pressed (when on ice)
