The exhaust is going on the Koup right now @ Hanson muffler. They talked me out of a dual design b/c of the limitations of space and that a single would flow better. I took pictures before the surgery and will take ones after.

Well the kit is on. Ed talked me out of the dual system. The first reason was flow--nothing was going to flow like a good single system. The second reason was weight and cost. The third was there is no good way to cut the rear diffuser to match the stock cutout. Last the area on the drivers side rear is smaller thand the passenger side.

With that decision behind us we went with a 2-1/4 pipe size to keep torque loss down. The stock system goes as small as 1 7/8 especially in and out of the stock muffler.

The system you see here is a mix of Magnaflow and Dynomax. I wanted the car to flow very well but be very quiet. What I got was what I wanted--almost stock sounding with more pickup and better gas mileage. I averaged 35.5 MPG on the way home. Once home I romped on it and it pulls harder across the range. I am expecting that there is a 10-15HP bump from the kit.

Here is the stock system

Here are the rear positions I mentioned

Drivers Side

Passenger side (Note the size differnce!)

And now for some comparision shots

Stock Muffler vs Dynomax (Look at how tiny and jacked up the exit to the spillter is..)

Look at the difference in size and smooth flow! Also look at how the tube on the stock muffler is 1-7/8 at the exit!

The Aftermarket (much better) Split Tip

The Dynomax Muffler installed and waiting on Tip

New 2 1/4 Catback Resonator from Magnaflow (Very Quieting and smooth straight through)

New 2 1/4 Mid Pip going towards Dynomax Muffler

New Dynomax Muffler with the Awesome tip installed...

And dual offset tip!

Merry Christmas folks--let me know what you think. Oh, yeah and the bonus sounds almost completely stock but more umphh and 35.5 mpg on the highway with the 2.4!

Good job...looks nice. Is it true that the stock exhaust just bolted off -- and you can reuse it by just bolting it back on if you need to?

What is the manufacturer and part number of the new twin-tip you got, can you provide the PNs of the resonator and muffler too?

I wonder how it would sound if you just used two resonators?

Thanks!

Yes, it's true. The stock exhaust is in my garage which unbolted. Also the second cat isn't monitored and is flanged so for those wanting ultimate performance the second cat would come out.

Two resonators would probably work as this setup is whisper quiet. Even my girl can't tell the difference. I can tell on deceleration but that's it.

I have hit 41 mpg on certain stretches at 70mph. Man--You guys have to do this...power and economy.

Lightweight pulley on Monday!

Thanks guys--ed does great work. I let my girl drive this afternoon and she simply said--this now feels like a sports car. Mission accomplished.

Maybe the Nitrous express kit should migrate from the miata.

Guys--the shop closed hours after the exhaust went on.. I will hit them up for parts #'s on Monday. Also, I am getting a "test pipe" for a second cat delete (for off road only, of course. :p)

I would run without the resonator if you want sporty sound...this thing is quiet. Although I am sure it will get louder with the 2nd unmonitored cat deleted.

Merry Christmas all...

The test pipe is on and the noise level did not go up. This exhaust looks easy to work on as it is flanged all over the place, great set up for aftermarket parts.

Well actually it is a little deeper under load but still sounds like a well engineered stock exhaust. The Resonator is huge so it's taking away most of the growl. I like it this was b/c it doesn't sound ricer and only has deep tone under hard accel. With the lightened crank pulley and delete I averaged ~37-38 mpg on the freeway and am holding my averages above 34 after returning to the street. This includes a few pulls to redline to see what she had--she didn't disappoint! ;-)

A manual Forte would be hot with this setup (Drop in K&N, exhaust, 2nd cat delete, and lightweight pulley)

The car feels like it is making ~200crank hp now and is getting the mileage to back it up as it went from 31mpg to ~37. Obviously it's breathing much better!

Thanks for the hospitality Sean, I enjoyed the shop and will post pics shortly.

PS: I have the part # request into Hanson's Muffler so my kit can be copied.

All the best,
-Bobby

Hey Guys,

Ed wants me to have those intersted in the kit to call him. He can custom specify the parts for your needs/applications. You most likely will want a smaller resonator or none at all depending on the sound you want. I wanted quiet but performance.

His number is 619.698.7030 or [email protected]. Tell him what you want and he can help spec the right setup.

trust me you can really feel the difference and feel the engine breathing much better even at slow start its feel a lot better to launch(a bit easieast with the clutch) off course mabye its will not giving like 15 whp but its can give enought to really feel it no just let you THINK you have more power with that mod you know !

of course its not as shiney! as a 799$buck full cat back system but for a little under 200$ to make basically the same feeling and sound Im sure nobody can tell its not worth it :D
