So I installed the GFB Respons BOV, and almost immediately got a CEL. Now I know some folks were having an issue when it was left to 100% vent, which I did at first not knowing this. So I closed it to about 50/50, cleared the code, still getting a CEL. At first I was also loosing boost after about 20 minutes of driving, was great in the first 20 minutes, but then it dropped. Now that I have it at 50/50, I'm still getting the CEL, and it's dropping boost after about an hour of driving.

Anyone else run in to this, or know what is going on here?

I have been trying to look this up, and everyone else fixed this by not leaving it to full vent, this however did not work in my case.

Thanks in advance!

I can't remember what the numbers are but it's the one for the recirc valve giving an abnormal reading. It's the same one everyone gets when they leave the GFB BOV on full vent.

Are you using the stock RCV solenoid? The stock one may not provide the response and air volume needed to actuate the aftermarket BOV. I use a Pierburg solenoid from N75 Motorsports.
I am yes, that makes perfect sense. Next question, and this may seem stupid but I've never dealt with this before, where is the solenoid and where does it go?

It's on the intercooler pipe. Just follow the vacuum line from the BOV and it will lead you to it.
Thank you! Gonna order it this weekend.

As far as I can tell? I don't HEAR any leaking boost when the code happens, or when it looses boost. Not like when I didn't have the clamp tight enough on the intercooler reso delete pipe installed, that you could CLEARLY hear the boost leaking. And it seems to change when I adjust how much I am venting. When set to full circulate, I get a longer stint of driving with boost, set to full open, I get about 15 minutes. 50/50 I get about an hour. Now if I drive it easy at 50/50, it doesn't do this, but after an hour, if I get on it, I lose boost almost immediately after I hear the valve open and vent. It is very similar to when you cold start the car and have no boost till it warms up.

Yep that is it, I didn't see that before ordering and installing the BOV. After I get the solenoid it's going down to my buddies shop and he is going to do a tune on it. Pretty excited.

He also has a new fast spooling turbo as well as his own patented anti lag he invented he said I could just have.

If that “ invention” works ya might want him to drop by here.. he can make some easy money.
Apparently my car is going to be the test car for it, so we will see!

m running the Same BOV at 50/50 on my 22. Never an issue with mine.
Is your car DCT or manual? I am wondering if the folks that aren't having the issue have the DCT? In any case I'm ordering the solenoid today.

No codes with it either. DCT
I am wondering if it is less of a problem with the DCT, mine is a manual and it's going to use that valve more often than on a DCT due to shift times. Not the first I've heard this happening either, just heard that it was when one had it on full vent. But like I was saying it doesn't matter if I am at full vent, 50/50 or full recirculate, it just changes the amount of time before I throw a code and lose boost.

Could be because it's a manual, but a DTC is basically a computer operated manual that shifts faster than a normal person could. But it doesn't matter even if I shift it manually. Could just a bad batch of solenoids. Seems to be hit or miss on the code. Some of us are good and others are not.
Right however, the DCT shifts faster, MUCH faster than a manual, even when you are in the manual shift mode, so the time in between shifts is milliseconds, in most cases not venting between shifts so no loss in pressure. Whereas a manual would have longer periods between shifts and using the valve more frequently. Even in manual shift mode it's still shifting the same in the sense that even though you are selecting WHEN to shift, you aren't selecting HOW to shift in terms of speed. It still shifts fast.

Sorry forgot to hit on this too, you are right there however, I wonder if that part is the environment in which you are driving? If I am easy on it, it doesn't happen, but any spirited driving I can count on it throwing the code.

Another possibility is altitude. It does make a difference in timing and fuel ratio.
Could be? Who knows at this point, all I know is that I have the solenoid ordered and it is on it's merry way lol

I haven't had a chance to install it yet, I have it but the weather here has prevented me from actually getting it done. I think I'm going to get it done on my next weekend but we will see. The GFB also has the adjustable spring, I did not adjust it from it's factory settings however, is this something that needs to be addressed?

What ever happened to "neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night"? ...Oh, never mind...that USED to be the Post Office motto...:)
I need to make some room in my garage, but I have 2 projects currently in there right now that aren't drivable lol.

Is your Corolla 2 door or 4 door? What engine?
It's a 92 wagon, currently has the 4A-FE in it, and I have a blacktop waiting to go in it.

Looks great! Are you running the 6 speed as well? Open ITBs in a 20 valve is glorious.
That's the plan! Open ITBs, once I get that working correctly taking it down to my buddies tune shop and doing a small turbo setup in it. I have been toying with converting it to RWD drive as well, but that may be more than I want to dump into it. It really started off as a "ridiculous" project lol.

I got the car for free, it was running on 3 cyl when I got it. I replaced the valve cover gasket, injectors, spark plugs, master brake cyl, and recently put an all aluminum radiator in it. Straight pipe out to a flowmaster 40 with a tip, XXR 002.5 15x8s full LED conversion, ordered the full headlight units out of Thailand, they are actually glass as well. Quick release NRG woodgrain steering wheel, and one of my favorite parts of the car, the "OOGA" horn lol.

Looks great!
Thank you BTW! Sorry I forgot to actually type that. It is one of my favorite cars I have EVER owned, it's such a blast to drive. It's loud, it's noisy, it's not super comfortable and has power nothing, well power steering but that is it. No ABS, no traction control, but it does have A/C lol.

Haven't seen one of those in years lol Back when they easily hit 300k
Mine is almost there, 240K at this point! lol

I bought a beat Saturn wagon with a 5spd, no a/c, power nothing except steering as well, for $300 to teach my girls how to drive standard about 5 years ago. Ended up registering it and driving it for two years until the rear main went. Junk yard gave me $200 for it. I loved that stupid car. It weighed nothing and the 5spd was a refreshing reminder of what it was like back in the day. That is the biggest reason I bought the Forte GT with a 6spd, I missed driving manual so much. This is the only picture I can find of it. I think my wife tried to erase all evidence of us owning it.
At one point the Corolla was my only car, I got it running but it was just a car, not a project. I loved it immediately, but I had had many Corollas before so I always had a affinity for them. My wife FINALLY asked "Are you EVER going to get a new car?" lol So I got my Forte, and turned the Corolla in to a major project lol.

Here's one of my old projects. 1985 Corolla GTS. 16v with HKS sport cams.
God I love those, I wish I would have kept the one I had....now you can't get one for a reasonable price.

6spd and vented to atmosphere and sometimes age 2-4ys old. Makes me think the factory BOV solenoid gets tired faster in the 6spd cars and fails more often
Would make sense but my Forte now was less than 1 year old when started, with 6K miles on it. So I'm not sure it applies there? I never put the GFB on my 21 so I don't have data on that one, but it was also a 6sp, like my 22. My 21 had 22K on it at 1 year, no CEL but also no GFB.
