So do I need the BOV Solenoid? I thought it was controlled by the ECU and not a solenoid?

The ecu controls the solenoid. Some people have been fine with the stock solenoid most change to a Pierburg which there are 3 different variations being used by people on here. They are for Volvo, VW and Ford. They all seem to work for everyone. The inlet outlet diameters vary for each. The internals are a mystery as to what might be different.
