I wanted a reliable car that did not have the gt gdi engine (I personally believe kia isn't good at making gdi engines). I also wanted the black out package the gt-line came with in 2019. They did not have the features of the EX as options in 2019 so I had to deal with it. I wish I could have waited till 2021 but my previous car (mazda cx-7) grenaded.

Pretty much all direct injection engines have the propensity for carbon buildup regardless of manufacturer. That being said an MPI engine will require less maintenance but may or may not be more reliable.

Yep. See - rod knock issues on MPI Kia 2.0L engines in the past. Supposedly it's fixed - we will see how that goes.
