First Off remove headlight (Part 1)

Video curtsey of BigE

If the video isn't enough, here's the explanation

ok so i've looked around the forum looking for complete details on how to install an HID kit. Haven't found anything for people like me who suck when it comes to electronics. So with help from my pops, i'd figure i'd give a complete write up with pics. All pics are in order.....

1. remove the 2 bolts on top of the housing. remove the housing. its a pain and you'll need to muscle it out, just becareful not to break anything. It took me about 10 mins just to pop out the one on the driver side. the passenger side was a little easier.

2. remove the harness. just push the tab down and it pops right out.

3. this is the dirt cover everyone is talking about. it just screws right off.

4. the old bulb!! not really plugged in, just twist it counterclockwise.

5. this is the bulb removed

this is the dismantal part. install will be part2

Bump!

Noodile, kindly edit these low-quality pics appropriately. After numerous searches, I have yet to see a thread where someone asks where to mount their ballasts that gets anything more than a written answer. So while I was doing my install, I took some pics with the lights removed. I noticed the area under my lights is different from what I saw yesterday inside of an EX 5door.

First picture is the driver's side, second is passenger.

Now, the second set of pictures with the yellow boxes are where I mounted my ballasts using the 3M double sided tape. When I saw the engine compartment of Bryanguystatus's 5, he had some pretty obvious areas where he could mount the ballasts. Keep in mind, I've got a 2010 Koup SX 5speed A/T and he has a 2012 EX 5door, no fogs.

EDIT: Oh and Noodile, the last 2 pics that I just uploaded are proof that even a total n00b like me can do this stuff if they READ THE DAMNED STICKIES!

Well, i figured the ballast would get hot, and it wouldn't be smart to put it on plastic... which melts. Didn't realize those were AC components i put it under. I may move it.

One more thing. In the instructions in this thread, the wires are blue and white. The DiodeDynamics kit has red and black. Black goes in first (closest to the bulb,) red goes in second (closest to the dust cap.)

Ddmtuning .... Very disappointing, installed the HID slim ballast kit, 2 days later, passenger side stopped working. Turned out to be a faulty ballast ... Went online, did a warranty ticket, took 2 days to hear back from them, so I sent the ballast back, tried to sign in to check status, had no password, so I requested a password, 2 days later, got tired of waiting and had to call ... Not happy at all, but I guess s$@t happens right? Hopefully I will get a replacement soon ...

So I figured this return would be different... I am way disappointed with their customer service. It took a week for them to "receive" my faulty ballast, then I called them on June 22nd, and they said they were shipping my replacement the next day. Well, today, July 1st, I got the email saying my product was just shipped from China or Japan or wherever they ship from .... So I will be driving with different color headlights for over 3 weeks .... That is way too long and poor customer service to say the least. I pray that I never have to deal with this ever again.

So I'm looking online at ddmtuning.com and a lot of this is confusing, but I do know I want 6000k HID low beams.

Do I need one of thoes "error code" things? What exactly is a ballast? Do I need one? Basically, what would I need to buy to install these on my forte Koup? Thanks! (sorry for sounding like a dumbass)

A ballast controls the current going to the bulb, and yes it is essential. You get one for each bulb in the kits.

Read the first two pages of posts, and you'll be ready.

What is there different about doing the hid fogs? Is it the same as headlights, drilling the hole and all? I've tried searching the forum but couldn't find much.

Does anyone know if you can just take out the battery in order to change out the bulbs. I probably wont go HID but want to at least change them to hyperwhites. Also, are there any DRL on the Forte. I am wanting to use an led strip as them but dont see any on during the day.
Thanks!

Thank U

Noodile... omg thank u so much for this thread! Diode Dynamics sent me an extra cable and it totally confused me. after viewing these pics and videos i "baked the cake" and now i have the best head lights in Austin, TX!

Why dont we have Thanks Button like on every other vBulletin based forum?

Ok so we put DD fogs and low beams, 35W 4300 lights in my buddys 2010 Forte Koup, we used a relay on the fogs, connecting it directly to the battery, putting the 2 little connectors on the fog light side on the driver side, ran the wires and connected the balasts on both sides etc.

everything turns on, the drivers side the fog works perfect, on the passenger side it will flicker for 10-15 seconds before turning on all the way and staying on.

any solution to this or just kinda have to deal with it?

it might be a ballast or wiring issue. Try switching the ballast first to see if the problem occurs on the other bulb. If that doesn't change anything, it may be the harness. Disconnect the connector from the ballast on the problematic side and connect it to the other ballast so that the connectors (from the relay harness) are on different ballasts. Also, check your ground and any open wires.

Question! I had my hid lights in for a couple of months now, and everything worked fine, but now my low beams aren't turning on? Did I blow a fuse or something? Are there any common problems that this could be?

Hey Kpac,

I would not recommend leaving your dust cover off. You risk having dirt dust, or condesation getting into your headlight which will cause problems down the road. I ordered my HID's from diode dynamics and the rubber seal came on the kit with the wires already threaded through. Im sure you could find them at any hardware store, or call DD and see if they can gice you some info on it.

I know this is a very old thread/post but I have yielded & succumbed to HID's.

I'm wanting to order from DDM. Which HID kits would I need to make them function properly without any problem? What special plugs/wires/relays?

Been reading about doing the H11B to H11 & HID's. Which would be better than the standard low output H11B's? Been having low road illumination from the stock H11B's I end up relying on the high beams alot for night driving.
Their website is plain & lacking but can't beat the prices compared to the other most expensive HID kits for 2010 thru 2013 Fortes.

This is what I've chosen. Not ready to buy just needing more info & since it's DDM & their subpar customer service, I'd like to hear the input & info from those who have bought from them & what other items needed to make them work/fit in 2010 thru 2013 Forte headlights.

I'm only looking to upgrade the H11B's.

H1's (high) & 881 (fogs) later on. If i did decide to HID the H1's (highs) & 881's (fogs) what HID's kits would I need?
