How to remove side mirror cover for painting?

432 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  mobileterminaluser
Helping a friend replace a broken passenger side mirror on a 2018 sedan. Replacement part # is K 87620 B0000, no signal repeater, no puddle light. Have removed mirror from new assembly and unscrewed tilt assembly, but not seeing how to remove the cover so it can be painted the appropriate color.

Have searched and found info for older models and those with the LED strip, but nothing so far for this version. There are two snap tabs at the top, but they don’t appear to affect the cap when they are blocked “open” - nothing seems to change other than the tilt assembly drops back inside the mirror.

Any help appreciated!!

If you have the new mirror cover then you should be able to look at it and determine what is holding the old mirror on.

I never replaced a 2nd gen mirror so I don't know exactly how they are attached - the 1st gen mirrors are tough to remove without breaking 1 or 2 of the retainers. The bottom retainers are difficult to get to - you have to remove the mirror to get to them.

I got the mirror off with no issue - it’s trying to get the back (or front depending how you look at it!) shell of the mirror housing off so that I can paint it.

Don’t have just the cover, have an entire brand new mirror assembly.

What I wrote above was about the cover - not the mirror assy. I didn't clarify very well...DOH!

Did you watch the video about the cover?

Got it off. The video wasn’t helpful for this mirror version though. Turns out there are 4 individual clips along the lower half that snap in, and once it’s in place - you can only access one (circled in red) of them from

the mirror side. Ridiculous. But, that one gets you an opening to wiggle the cover off. The one clip you can unlatch is right through the hole the wires feed through - I’ve attached a picture so when someone looks for this info in the future, they’ll have some sorta clue where to start.

Thanks!

Even one bottom clip will break no matter how careful one is. 😤😡
