So I was all set and ready to buy a kia forte5 SX 2015, agreed on the finance, and just waiting for my co-signer to get approved.

That is until... I checked how much insurance would cost me

I called Geico and they called me a quote of 3400 for SIX MONTHS, thats nearly 600 dollars a month, when my car payments are only 280.

How can anyone possibly drive with that kind of expense?

I'm a new driver, less than a year with my state license, but even then...

Will I have luck with other insurance companies? I have no fines or anything significant from my short driving history...

I live in NJ and a really nice neighborhood called Alpine, so i dont understand why it's so expensive. I even told them my use of the car would just be daily commutes to school.

I was naively thinking insurance wouldnt be more than 3k a year, but if I get quotes from other companies and they are all around this ballpark, I can kiss my new 2015 kia forte5 sx goodbye.

Also in that case what happens to the financing deal I made with the dealership? I signed a couple papers and paid a 300 dollar deposit while waiting for my cosigner to get approved, it's been about 5 days. The car that I wanted wasn't in their inventory so it's not like I drove it or anything, yet alone them having it. Will they easily let me out of our deal if I explain to them my situation and can i expect my deposit back?

You've entered a binding contract, just because you can't make the insurance payments doesn't mean you get a out of contract deal, from my experience anyways. If I was you, I would defiantly check other companies out before getting all worried. If worst comes to worst, see if you can't get on your parents insurance, it will make a significant decrease in your above quoted price.

You have just paid a deposit, you haven't bought the car yet. If the insurance doesn't work out and you don't want to buy the car, then they will give you your deposit back.

In his post he said he signed papers, if so then there is a binding contract. Best case he loses his deposit, worst case he may be hit with a lawsuit.

You've learned an important lesson. Always find out what the insurance will be before getting a particular car. It differs greatly by model, where you live, work, and drive, and the insurance company. In this case it isn't the car. Kias are not expensive to insure compared to other cares because they can be repaired and/or replaced inexpensively. It is because you are a new driver that will cost you. Shop around. If you have a family member that was in the military try USAA. They are often the cheapest.

That's great, I don't want to hear about how your monthly is 114 -_-

Anyway thanks for the other advice. I called around, including 21 century, amica, progressive, and it's all around the same ballpark so...

Guess I'm off the car market. I'm living with my aunt and uncle who have insurance so MAYBE i can get it under them, who knows

as auto insurance is based on the individual (how long driving, accident free, type of vehicle, location, etc, etc), asking what someone else gets really is of no help at all. Call an insurance broker they can check out all various possibilities from many different insurers.

I'm an insurance agent in NJ & FL. Can I try some of my companies & get you a quote tomorrow? I have about 10 companies I can try to get you covered with. Email me at SupraLM@aol.com. Don't give up! I went from a 2002 Chevy Tahoe Z71 to a 2011 Kia Forte Koup & my insurance only went up like $20/mo. Which for a brand new car, is NOT bad. It won't hurt to at least let me try. I'm a female & i'm honestly not trying to blow smoke up your ass. I know a lot about cars & insurance so i'd love to help. Oh, and I pay like $80/mo for insurance (in FL).

This is what happens when you are young, male, live on the east coast and either have no credit or bad credit.

OTOH, an older guy like me who is married with kids and has good credit can get both his 2014 Forester and 2012 Forte insured for about $1400 a year. Of course that is part of an umbrella policy that covers all of our property but the auto portion is about $1400.

I too was in the same boat. Lowest quote I received for my own policy was 500/mo and highest I received was 750/mo (Michigan). I tried to explain that KIA didn't stand for Killed In Action but I guess they didn't get the joke. They basically just said that's the best they can do and that's just the way things work until I'm 25 years old. Had to have my dad cosign and we also pay it 6 months forward so it's a LITTLE bit cheaper than monthly...my rate is slightly over 200/mo now but that beats 500 or 750 any day of the week lol.

One thing that you may try looking at is the deductible, ask the agent what your deductible is and play around with the amount. When I was younger I got my deductible at $500 and my payments went from $220 to $150. It may help you in your case also.
