Anybody experiencing a loud clunk if you wag the dog. I mean if you are going down a side street at about 10 mph and move the wheel left to right kinda fast, my Koup has a loud clunk coming from the front. I called Kia and they are sending a tow vehicle to pick it up. They said don't drive it. Anybody else?? I first noticed this after letting the car set for a few days, this is after Kia replaced the battery and did some other stuff. I got in the car and when I pulled out of the driveway I heard a small clunk, so then everytime the weight shifted from one side to the other like turning left and then straight and then right, etc. it would clunk. So when I got back in my neighborhood, I did some exagerated left right wagging and it's like clunk-clunk-clunk only really loud and I can feel it.

The service advisor at Kia gave me their road side assistance number, said don't drive it, have it towed to us. Wonder if they know something I don't?


Just as a side note, it's not the boots over the struts hitting the bottom out bumpers, I checked , they are in place. This thing is loud!!

They will get it tomorrow morning. It sound like a metal to metal clunk. Not a loose battery. It is not a bumping noise, it sound like struts or bearings or something like that clunking. It does not take much to make it do it.

I will be out of touch this weekend but will post next week when I get the car back with results of their efforts.

Hopefully not a broken ball joint. Had an old car that had a totally worn balljoint that sounded and did the same.

Ouch thats bad news..
well yeah if its a metal on metal sound that would be a good guess ^^^^^
could be the bearings I had a eclipse and the wheel bearings on the spindal took a crap they made bad vibrations and metal to metal sound
but normally bearings live for a long time thank god for warrenty

Was it a pontiac grand am? Lol my father had one and went through 14. After the 3rd he got the one that had the lifetime warranty so the next 11 were all covered

That brings a shiver down my spine thinking of the threads being shaved off moving the wheel around if it wasn't tightened.

more i keep reading this thread-.......more i lean toward- oh fk- they failed to put a wheel back on properly.......
his car can't be old enough to have serious wear/tear on ball joints or any other serious susp. joint probs..........
but- a simple case of failing to tighten all the lug nuts up-can cause wheel wobble.......

I had to get my wheel bearings replaced after 3k. They said they were assembled wrong.

Update from Kia

Well,

They called and said they cannot reproduce the noise. The other things they had just had the car for were an alignment problem with the passenger door window and a noise in the sunroof along with a dead battery which they replaced. As I said, I let the car sit for about a week or so after I got it back and that is when I noticed the noise. I did not notice any issue when I picked the car up the last time. I talked to service this morning and said I will pick it up this evening and that if it does it when I get it back, I will call road side assistance again and again till they find it and fix it. I am wondering if the ride there on the bed of the wrecker truck with all that bouncing caused the noise to stop or if maybe it was a loose wheel and they just tightened up the lug nuts
and said "no problem found" . I guess time will tell.

I will pick it up this evening and let you know what if the noise is still there.

Updated info

I went to Kia to pick up the Koup and they tell me they could not reproduce the noise. The shop foreman drove it along with the service advisor. He goes to get the car for me, making a point of telling me that it has been stored inside the whole time, and that most cars are not. I said thanks, glad to hear it. Seems like it is taking too long to get the car. About 10 minutes later it shows up and the service rep says, "I just heard the noise". Appearantly, the car sitting from Friday, when they last looked at it till Monday afternoon, was long enough for the problem to remanifest. Strut bushing, they think. So they are ordering only the bushing, not the strut. Should be ready Wednesday. If they get in there and the strut has issues, they will then order a replacent strut, which will take another week to get as it comes from BFE via ground transport. I have read other threads here that strut bushings were noisy, or at least I think it was on this website. Funny that it only seems to be noisy when the car sets for a few days, so look out, you may have a problem and not even know it.

ah- are you talking about that one advisory where that rubber thingy at the top of the strut falls down during cold weather?

i had forgotten about that one- and if i remember right- it was aggrevated by cold weather.....
if i remember correctly- someone posted a walkthru w/photos showing how to fix the problem w/o removing the bushing or was it fixing it w/o tearing the whole strut apart to get at it...... it was basically- slap some glue in the right places- lol)

It is not the rubber boot.

The strut bushing itself is bad, clunking around whenever the strut loads and unloads. Weather is still warm here in Dallas, 90 this past weekend so no cold weather related boot problems.......

This is not the glue it with RTV and a tie down problem. The strut bushing is worn to the point that the strut is moving around.

Time will tell if this is a one-off or recurring issue.

It turned out to be the upper strut support??

I will pick the car up today. Wonder if the other side is going out next??
