Left or Right, when the description says L or R on Kia Parts Online, does that refer to L or R while sitting in the car, or standing in front of it looking into the engine bay? Obviously that makes a big difference depending upon the part in question. I looked on their website but it does not explain the rationale for what is L and what is R.

That's a good question. It's never occurred to me.
Whenever I order car parts that are left or right. It's always been for me, left (driver side) & right (passenger side) & or before ordering. I either message, call, verify by asking " i need left, driver's side or right passenger side" & I get the correct part/s & side.
Could be different or 180° if ordering overseas/non north American.

It can also be confusing using 'drivers' and 'passenger' side to define left and right, because different markets have the steering wheel on different sides.
Think of it from the view of which way the car is facing. IE, if you're looking down on the car from above and car is point up (or north, or forward etc) left is left and right is right - no matter the driver's side.

Yep setting in the car behind the steering wheel your right hand is the right side and your left hand is the left side
