MPG - the mystery of THE WIFE EFFECT!

Last week I went west of the Island and spent three days with my wife. Our first stop to a gathering to celebrate with my classmates 50 years from graduation. Second, it was our 35th wedding anniversary. Then to some errands related to my passed father's house. We practically went around the Island from north to west to south and back north again.

Interestingly, I have made this trip many times before, but this is the first time with her. Hence, this is what I call the mystery of "THE WIFE EFFECT":

The whole trip was about 300 miles.

That is so true. I get about 5mpg more when the wife is with me. The other day we took the same route I take for work together and I got 42mpg vs my normal 30-35mpg. I still don't know how that happened.

Obviously you don't drive as fast with the wife in the car. It's called protection mode. I do the same with my wife. We also have been married 35 years and my 50 year high school reunion will be next year. So we're pretty close in age and marriage, ZiggyM5!

Let me put it this way. Even before we married, we always had arguments about my driving. In 35 years married, I had never gotten in any accident more than a scratch here and there. I've been driving since I was 13, with a license since I was 16 or 53 years ago, and never gotten in an accident eighter. As part of the BMWCCA in PR, I have been a driving instructor for over a decade. But nothing works for her. We don't have any serious problem with that, but several months ago she was altered because another car got too close to us and I told her that I couldn't manage what other drivers do and from that day on I wouldn't drive.

As you can see in this story, that statement didn't last long. Our case is chronic and stressful. When I drive in the city, I try not to go over 40-50 mph; even at that speed, she always grasps to anything whenever she believes we are going too fast. The worst part is when she screams for anything, which I have told her many times is dangerous because I could react without knowing precisely what's happening. Driving with her in the passenger side is still today the most stressful time for me, and I have been like it for more than 35 years. Love is in the way because otherwise, I wouldn't know whether we were still together. I take it with humor. It is not as bad as it sounds. It hasn't made any dent in our relationship.

I've been a gearhead since I remember. Cars and everything with an engine, tires, and can be driven is one of my passions. I love speed, loud engines, and the adrenaline rush when going fast. However, I mostly don't take risks. I have taken some risks in a very short time and got up to 167 mph once. When I started my driving classes with the Porsche Club of America (PCA), I thought I knew how to drive. I've learned much about driving at the local tracks and a three-day training with Skipp Barber at Sebring, FL. Anyway, I am sharing this post just for fun and to show how the mystery of "THE WIFE EFFECT" affects most of us. Luckily some of you don't suffer from that effect. Cheers! :sneaky:(y)🏁

Same same. My wife enjoys when I drive in a spirited fashion.

She just doesn’t like it when I’m in traffic because someone yells at idiots. I still haven’t found the source but when I do, I’m going have it fixed

I get significantly better gas mileage and drive slower than my wife. She is very much hard on the gas and the brakes. 30k out of a set of brakes on her car is a really good run.

When my wife drives I go to sleep, better to die in my sleep than see it coming.

I need to install a fake brake pedal on the passenger side of my car for my wife. She learned years ago not to criticize my driving and I wouldn't criticize her cooking. Every once in a while I can still see her putting her foot on that invisible brake pedal, but for the most part, she's got her nose stuck in her telephone like a teenager. I'm okay with that.
