Noise when engaging first gear

For a while now, there has been a strange noise when engaging first gear and moving from a stopped position. As I let the clutch out, it makes a sound almost like when you blow across the top of an empty bottle. Usually no vibration and sometimes it's loud and other times not. Never does it in another gear.

It typically only makes the noise when I first start out in the morning and will continue for the first 3 or 4 miles. Hardly ever does it after that. Also, it does not do it every morning and will go weeks without making the noise. It does seem to happen more often when it's damp or raining. However, I garage the car, so it's not wet when I leave.

While this has been happening for almost a year, it's so sporadic, I haven't bothered to bring it in to the dealer. However, today it's humid and raining, so it happened 6 or 7 times today.

It has to be something with the clutch engaging with the pressure plate, but why? The car has just over 48k miles and otherwise is perfect.

Any ideas out there?

I believe there is a valve in the lines that restricts flow so the clutch can't engage faster than a set maximum. My Koup makes the same noise sometimes, usually when it's between 18 and 25 degrees C outside. I wonder if using a synthetic fluid might help lubricate the valve better.

I mentioned this in another transmission thread as well, it could be just your car oils and juices getting warmed up and after a few miles the noise goes away due to them warming up to proper temps. Im just guessing though

I am having the same problem with my 2011 forte koup sx, seems to be only when it is raining out and I am in first going up an incline. I managed to get a video of the noise, it was pretty loud. I will upload it later tonight. only have 45000k on the car.......gunna be pretty upset if I have to get a new clutch.......have an appointment at the dealership to have a look at it.

The noise in my car has lessened, but it's still there. Really can't hear it unless the windows are open. Damp weather and needing more torque to get going due to hill does seem to bring it out more as Redrocket said. The clutch doesn't seem to slip at all and since it's not consistent, I haven't bothered to bring it to the dealer. I have also had it do it in reverse a couple of times.

A friend thinks it's the first gear syncro and the transmission will eventually fail. I hope he's wrong!

I'm sorry to hear about the problem, Walpole. At least the first gear/synchro should be covered by warranty if they do fail. Hopefully the problem will remain just an intermittent noise and not become a pain in the rear. How many miles are at right now? Around 50K or so?

This is just normal
i have the same issue or noise
eliminated by applying some grease to somewhere under the air filter box
above the gear box .in the engine bay . I will try to get some pics soon .it is near the cdv . U put some grease onto the rubber bushing .that will eleminat any noise from that portion

Interesting. If you could get a picture, that would be great. I was pulling out of an underground garage in Boston over the weekend and the noise was very loud. Embarrassing really. If I can lubricate a bushing to get rid of it, I'll do it this evening!

I do have the 2.4L, which has the cdv in the transmission. So, not sure exactly where the bushing will be.

reply to Noise when engaging first gear

My 2010 Koup had the clutch engagement noise characterized by Walpole5 as sounding like blowing across the top of a bottle. For me it sounded like a cross between that and the metallic warning generated by worn brake pads when the warning material starts squeeling. No impact on moving the car, just this nasty, crazy noise. I asked my dealer service department to listen for themselves, noting that I had complained about it since around 10K miles (now has 25K). They agreed I wasn't crazy, decided to perform surgery. They found that the flywheel looked like an LP record with grooves, and that the clutch disk had metallic pieces that looked like copper embedded in it. The suspicion is that it was a defect in the clutch manufacturing process. They are replacing the flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate as I speak. I can't tell you how much of a relief it is to know that this embarrassing sound is finally going away :)

Well, my car has almost 60k miles, so I don't think the clutch is covered anymore. I know the powertrain warranty goes to 100k miles, but I doubt the clutch is covered.

It still does it, in fact it did it a couple times today. I'll just keep going until the clutch gives out, I guess.

On the plus side, it doesn't seem to affect the car in any negative way. I'm beginning to think it may be some sort of intake noise. It does it mainly when you first start out and only when you are lugging it a bit when getting going in first gear. Possibly some sort of intake resonance while the car is warming up?

My kar is at kia, for this same problem + plus a clicking noise coming from the suspension/gearbox/engine mounts.

On the test drive, the mechanic told me he has heard this before and it's probably a problem with the clutch plate.
Kia has sent a technician to come and investigate, to approve the maintenance plan claim.

Will let you know how things turn out.

***clutch warranty is untill 20 000km in South africa

My car still makes the noise occasionally. Typically when it is wet or damp out and not long after the car has started. I'm at 75,000 miles and the clutch is still fine. Don't know what it is, but it'll be there until I'm done with the car.

Good luck. Let us know what they find with the clutch. It's a very odd problem. I never brought mine to the dealer, because the issue occurred too infrequently. As time goes by, it happens less and less. I'd love to know what it is.

Got the same problem, does it every once in awhile. My cars going for a service soon and will see what they decide to do, hopefully not just an oil change

It's crazy the way the sound comes and goes. I do think it happens more when it's damp. I've resigned myself to the fact the sound will be there for as long as I have the car. I was all set to bleed the clutch, I wish that had been the solution. It's easy and cheap. Maybe that's why the dealer did it?
