I had a bear of a time changing my oil for the first time.
The oil filter was on SOOOO tightly that I literally bent the sides in while taking it off. Finding the correct size wrench was tough too.
Once all said and done the first time, the next won't be so bad. I opted to use a K&N filter that can be removed with a socket set or box end wrench. I also used fully synthetic oil and will change it once every year.

Well... OK. I exaggerated... However, I do only change it in winter and in summer (twice a year). Changing oil every 3k for the average Joe is un-necessary in my, likely naive, book. No reason you can't go 10k to 12k between changes with a quality synthetic and a quality filter. Been doing it for years with no repercussions.
