I have a HTC Hero with Android 2.1 through Sprint... I've had my car for just barely over a month. The first couple weeks I had the car, everything worked fine, I synched my phone to the bluetooth, I could call people, receive calls... all was fine. Then suddenly, out of the blue, it wouldn't recognize anyone in my phonebook. I would say "Call <insert exact name from phonebook here>" and it would just keep saying "Pardon" until it gave up. I tried several different names, nothing would work. If I say a number though, it picks that up just fine. So then I upgraded the OS in my phone (it had Android 1.5 in it previously and it was upgraded to 2.1), thinking maybe that would help, plus it needed to be done anyway... I synched my phone again, still won't register any of the names I have in my phone book.

So what'd I miss? I was thinking maybe there was something wrong with the speaker in the car, but people I do talk to can understand me and it picks up the numbers just fine. There's no additional settings in my phone that need to be added; I've gone over everything in my phone several times looking for a little check mark I might be missing. And I can't find anything special in the manual. Anybody else have a similar issue or have any suggestions?

Did you try to delete the phone and re pair it?

Yup... twice. I did that before and after I upgraded the OS in my phone.

leave it paired and turn your bluetooth off then back on again after a bit, maybe will help?
service dept should be able to help you

UPDATE: So I just spent my lunch break trying to play with this silly thing and when I went into the phonebook, it said there were no entries. Even though if I try to press the little speak button too soon, it says "DOWNLOADING PHONEBOOK"... umm, okay... what are you taking so long to download if you're gonna tell me it's empty? So I went in there an manually entered some of the names by voice and it seems to work. That's just really annoying and I don't know why it worked for a couple weeks and then just suddenly stopped.

If you figure this out, let me know. I have a Pantec Matrix and I have the exact same symptoms. The dealer who sold me the car said it's my phone settings, but everything is turned on, visible, paired, recognized, except the phone book names that it took 25 minutes to download just to return empty.

When pairing to the car, once complete the hero should give you a notification in the notification bar asking if its ok to transfer the address book. If you miss the notification then nothing happens. There is no other way to force the contacts to sync other then that.

Guys I have an iPhone and this has happened a couple times too and what I figured out and, it maybe the solution depending on what all of you tried, was that when I reset my phone or update it or anything like that, my blutooth toggle on my phone would be off and when I turn it back on it all works fine. BUT I have also noticed is that I had to turn on the blutooth OUTSIDE of the car where it can't pair, and then you turn it on, or else it may connect that time but it won't save that it's on for some reason...just my observations

Hey, are you looking at the phonebook that is displayed in the car, not on the phone? If so, that phonebook is NOT what is being transferred from your phone. The car actually has an internal phonebook that you can manually put in numbers and names and record your voice for voicedial. There were a couple of numbers in my phone that the BT voice recognition would NOT recognize no matter how I said it and it would keep saying pardon till I turned it off or timed out. Hope this helps.
