Hello! This is my first post and hope someone can help me. Yesterday I tried to star my car in the morning but it looked like the battery was dead, the car wouldn’t start and I heard kind of an electrical noice but nothing happened. The dashboard lights just slightly dimmed. Also I noticed the temperature switched from Celsius to Fahrenheit. A friends came and helped me start my car with cables and everything was fine, my car would automatically rev but I thought it was normal. Later that day I turned of the car and then started it again and the engine light came on with the error P0106. My mechanic says I should buy a new MAP sensor. I thought it was an electrical issue. What should I do?

Check and clean your battery posts and clamps. Then see if the car starts. If so, you're good to go. If NOT, then take the battery somewhere and have it load tested. Is it the original battery? If so, then odds are pretty good that it's time for a new one.

The cars now starts as usual. I bought it from someone else last June so I’m not sure how old the battery is. What worries me is the P0106 engine message

If your car is running normal now then the MAP sensor isn't bad - if it was it wouldn't run right. I would have the OBDII scanned for any other codes then clear it.

I would also look into having the battery tested.

P0106 is common to get on these cars after the battery has been disconnected or died. The car will run crappy for a few days (2-3), but the code will go away and it will start running normal again, don't spend money on a new MAP sensor. You can read my saga here if you want: 2010 Koup Not Turning Over

I'm 99% sure your battery died due to the cold weather and you can be quite certain it'll happen again once the temperature dips. Get it tested if you can, or if not, wait to see if it dies again when the temp drops and replace it if so.

i disconnected the battery for an hour as other post suggested and started the car. The engine light went off but know my car is slowly reving up and down, almost as if it were a human breathing. What should I do?

Always blame the battery. It's the 1st thing to check then go down the list/process of elimination.

Battery, fuses/relays, wires, gas & air. If your battery is 5yrs & older get a new one.

2 days ago, had to buy a new battery for the 07 Toyota Scion TC 2.4L. It was struggling to turn on. It was from my Koup. Bought it 2015 ($115.00) from Walmart. The new one (2022) is $175.00. WTF?! Had no choice.

I don't own a welder to refresh & de crystalize the old battery back to full life trick/hack. Seen it on sweet project cars & on other vids.

Batteries are that high or higher in prices. Just like stealerships are price gouging/MSRP bs "demand" due to "customers driving up vehicles values & demand".

If you have another vehicle with a newer battery, use that to bench test the vehicle. If it starts right up, then it's the battery.

Let us know what it was.

My car is starting just fine now, I haven’t had any problems yet. Engine light is still on don’t know why but I’m doing what someone else suggested. I’ll wait around 2 days and see if it’s gone. I’ve noticed my cat is consuming more fuel but not sure if it is because of the cold temperatures

Do you have an Autozone nearby? Find a parts house that scans your car for free and find out why your engine light is on - or buy a cheap scanner so you can check it yourself.

Are your exhaust headers glowing red/bright red? That's a failing or clogged catalytic converter. I had to hollow out the 07 Toyota Scion TC 2.4L cat cause it was rough, hard stumbing fluctuating RPMs & limp mode (25mph) & the catalytic was glowing cherry red. It's all fixed. No problems or codes, DTCs or MILs.

If you can get or borrow an OBD2 scanner, you may have to program/set your battery so that your vehicle will recognize/allow with battery.

I don't have to do that on my OBD2 scanner when I remove/buy a new battery. Alot of vehicles do require that adjustment.

Wait a few days to see if it self adjusts.

Let us know what helped.

I got a 2011 Kia Forte and after 100,000 miles a light came on and we had similar battery problems, it was an electrical charge going to the battery, a sensor it constantly drained the battery. It believe I got the same error code. I would call your mechanic and get a price. Kia waiting list was months out so I got it fixed locally it was pricey, but vehicle is paid for so better than car payment. It occasionally still reminds me of cranking and old F150, we make sure all heat or ac stays off, before we crank it does it really help I dunno.
