Is a popping sound in the steering normal? I think its doing it all the time but it's most noticible when turning it at a stop. Sounds to be comming from outside the cabin towards the engine, is kind of a hallow pop like if you thump a watermellon. I understand the steering in this car isn't the usual type.

Could be a loose strut bolt, spring seated incorrectly, or maybe just needs some greasing. Can you get a video of the sound?

Mine is doing this frequently....it's the first issue I've ever had that has completely stumped the dealer. They hear it, but can't pin-point it. I can't be without my car to let them take it and play with it. If you hear anything, please let me know!! It's getting really annoying.

I went out to the car to try and get a video of the noise, and I couldn't get it to do it. It was doing it all night earlier after sitting outside work all day, we got home about 2 hrs ago which it's sat since then. It's been moist outside today, and it's been in the garage that 2 hours since we got home. I wonder if moisture has anything to do with it and being in the garage helped dry something out.

I drove the car around the block to see if getting it warmed up would make a difference and it just wouldn't pop one bit. If Gregskia is doing it frequently, I'll probably hear it again. Another analogy to the watermelon thumping one would be that it also reminds me of the sound a hard drive on a computer makes.

If anyone finds anything out, please let me know. It's not the most awful sound since when the car is moving you don't hear it very easily over the engine or road noise. BUT, I know steering issues can at times be very dangerous.

Gregskia, did your dealer think there was any concern for safety? We drive around my 10 month old in this car, and I can't afford to take any risks.

Found this with an internet search. Hope this is a different issue from ours:

Since you're saying it's when you're turning at a stop, I'm betting it's something to do with the upper strut bearing... it might just need the nut to be tightened, or the strut mount might need to be replaced. If you're still under warranty I'd swing by the dealer and let them take a look...

No, dealer wasn't concerned about safety. He said it might just be "free play" in the U-joint. They went through and made sure all the bolts/nuts were torqued to spec. Mine does it more often (or maybe I just hear it more) at low speeds (parking lots, mainly). Changing the mode has no effect, but I always leave mine in "comfort". Mine is hardly 3 months old with 25,000 miles. So far, no oddities other than the noise itself. I don't think it's a safety concern, more of an annoyance....kind of like I can't plug my iPhone in to charge without it automatically switching to play my music, starting alphabetically. That is my biggest peeve with the car. I'm thinking about recording an MP3 with no sound and titling it Aa, just so I don't have to hear it start playing music EVERY TIME!!

Edit: My dealer specifically listened at each strut. It is NOT coming from the strut....at least on mine. I verified this as well, as the dealer turned the wheel. It is somewhere between the column and the rack itself, possibly within the rack. I think it may be hitting a heat shield somewhere, personally, but I can't find anywhere it might be doing this.

Does yours pop just once or multiple times. I can turn all the way left or right (from a dead stop) and hear 3 to 4 pops. If I turn it fast, it probably pops a few more times than that. It does seem like the pops are spaced out evenly rather than erratic. I can turn one way and get it to pop, and turn back the other way and it'll pop about the same spot of the turn.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Got in the car this morning and it was popping quite well when steering. By the time I drove the 15 minutes to work, the popping had stopped. I was going to run it by my mechanic which is just about a mile from work to see what he thought and if I should take it to the delaer, but I can't show him what isn't happening at that time.

I wish I knew what this was. The popping was plenty loud when backing out of daycare. I think it pops once if you hit the brakes at that last 1 MPH or two before the car stops, causing the body to slightly lunge forward. I swear I can hear it when going down the road straight now and then, but that may just be me thinking I do, or some other road noise.

Is there anything I can check for this? What kind of steering is in these cars and do they use a power steering fluid I can check the levels on?

Mine does this and to me it sounds just like strut bearings or spring binding. I'm not worried about it, but will bring it to the dealer's attention when it goes in for service this month.

The cars have electric power steering, so no fluid or belts to check. I think av8r is right, I'd look at strut mounts (bearings). On my 2011, they are plastic and don't appear all that sturdy.

Nope. That's not what mine is doing. The sound isn't that systematic, either. Mine is more Pop..pa..poppop..pa.pop. Plus, both struts rotate like they are gliding on a cloud. I must be experiencing a different sound than you. As I said, mine sounds more like it is coming from the rack or column/shaft.

Yeah, driving it home I wasn't as excited about that video. It's similar in that it sounds like a thump/pop/knocking like that, but it's not that rhythmic on mine either. And it's bugging me that it comes and goes. This morning it was quite noticeable when backing out of the daycare parking spot and most of the way to work, coming home it was half as noticeable and not constantly doing it, maybe doing it the last third of the drive. Does your car do it constantly?

Next time it's doing it like this morning, I'm getting out of the car and having my wife turn the wheel so I can find where it's coming from.

Mine does it very randomly. More so when it's cold, I think. I put 275 miles a day on mine, though, so after a while I don't even notice it. My judgement is possibly flawed in that regard. Also interesting is that I don't feel anything in the steering when I hear the popping. If it was a strut mount, I should be able to feel it in the steering wheel...at least I could when it went out in my Sedona after 205k miles.

Anyone have any new info on this? Last night we went to a Christmas party, and it popped a lot on the way when turning. When we got back in the car to leave after a couple hours of it sitting in their driveway, it was popping so much it was like a constant creaking when turning fairly quickly. By the time we got home, it was popping more like usual, where it's just a few pops in a full turn (mostly towards the end of the possible turning range either way). I don't know if the car warmed back up or what, but this popping is getting a bit annoying. I hate to go to the dealership because it's an absolute pain here, but may have to.

BTW, I've tried to listen for this sound outside the car and I just can't find it. It sounds like it comes from somewhere in the steering column to me, perhaps part of the motor system (assuming that's in the column on these).

Mine hasn't done it since the entire under-side of the car has been caked with snow. That's why I'm thinking it's some sort of heat shield or something.

I have a '13SX so I can't really contribute much help, but a few things to keep in mind. Your '14 is still quite newish and "break in" period may need more time. The pop sound might be related to the different stearing modes you have. Try a new setting for a while. Also, if you take it in to the shop have them check for sound both on and off hoist. Doesnt sound serious, if anything I'd say an adjustment may be needed down the road.
