Hello all,

i have a 2010 Forte koup sx, one day i went to start it up and the car wont unlock with the remote i thought it was weird so i opened the car with the key and i tried to start it and it was completely dead no gauge lights nothing,
so i opened the hood to find out that some of the wiring to the fuse box were chewed up and that somehow drained the battery completely.

the harness is the main big one going one end to the bottom of the fuse box and the other end going down towards the cabin (drivers side) cant really tell where the other end is connected to though.

does anyone know how much would it cost to get it fixed and im pretty handy when it comes to cars can i fix it myself or is it too complicated? and what would be the name of that part if i want to buy it ive looked it up online but couldnt find it.

any help would be really appreciated, Thanks.

If you decide to try a DIY repair on this, you'll first need to get enough of the wiring bundle unwrapped to be able find each wire that's been damaged. Then, you'll know if it's possible to do a splice repair, which can either be a temporary or permanent fix. You're likely to need to remove electrical connectors and parts that are in the way, in order to get enough room to work. It's REALLY important to put tape on every broken or disconnected wire, and write on the tape where they go to. After you get everything undone, you might decide to buy the harness(es), but first you need to get as much unwrapped and uncovered as you possibly can. Good luck - it sounds like a real ugly mess.

Reviving an old discussion.

The chipmunks got me, ruined the coil and controls harnesses, $4220.70. These critters are everywhere as my neighbor has an enormous oak tree that hangs over half the length of my driveway. During fall/winter months I have to clear my driveway at least 3 times just to find it. I'm thinking of investing in some rodent and tree poison. Found a rodent repellent spray to coat the wiring, fender wells, and under carraige tray. Also, spread a dry granular repellent to which I added hot mexican chili powder, cayenne, black and white pepper and granulated garlic, all ingredients researched to be rodent deterents. Next up, varmint hunting.

Seems to be a problem more and more these days. Reason is that the "plastic" coating on the wires nowadays isn't actually 100% plastic. It's made from a soy base. And the varmits and critters seem to love the flavor. Friend of mine got mice in her car and they ate the wiring under the dash of her Camry. Wasn't cheap to fix, but I told her to get some small paper bags, mouse traps and peanut butter. You bait the trap with the peanut butter, set the trap and place it in the paper bag. Mouse goes in, pops the trap and you can dispose of it all in one clean package. Being the cheap bastard that I am, though, I remove the mouse, rebait the trap and reuse the trap. Mouse can stay in the bag for disposal.
