Has anyone on this forum replaced the shifter knob on their Koup? The silver plastic skin on the stock shifter knob is peeling on the top. The dealer has agreed to replace it, but I am not sure I want the same knob if there is no improvement on the quality.

If you have an SX with A/T and you have successfully replace the shifter knob with an aftermarket knob, I would really appreciate the following info:

1) Link to the product
2) What you had to do to install it.

Thanks for your help.:)

Did mine. No link though I got a leather wrapped one with red stitching to match the interior. Got it for 20somthin$ at Autozone or Pepboys, came with all the hardware and different shape and size spacers. I cut off maybe 2 inches from the shaft so it wasn't sitting so high. Didn't really need to, but just felt higher than the original I'll put a pic up later if u wanna see what it looks like.

I replaced mine a few weeks ago. Very easy to do. Just twist off the plastic piece at the bottom of the oem knob. Then remove the screw, and lift knob off. Then follow instructions included with new knob to install.

Here is a link to the one I got:

RED LED CHROME GEAR SHIFT KNOB INTERIOR SHIFTER RACING: eBay Motors (item 300460378273 end time Sep-05-10 22:03:33 PDT)

It has red leds. If you want blue just alter the search (shift knob blue leds). Or just shift knob for a different selection on ebay.

Good Luck...

Thanks for the replies. Pics would be nice if you have the time.

I have found a few nice looking shifter knobs on the web, but they all seem to work with shifters with threaded ends and not with a 2" long flat stem like the one on the SX. My main concern is the fit.

Did the knobs you guy's installed specify "universal fit"? If so, did they go on straight and mount in a solid manner?

Most universal shift knobs come with a set of screws and a rubber bushing kit. In the case of MOMO for example you get 3 or 4 screws and various rubber bushings. Out of the bushings offered your pretty much guaranteed to have one that fits your unit. Once the bushing is in place the screws simply tighten into the rubber pushing and thus lock themselves into the shaft. The rubber bushing holds the knob at the right place and also acts as a buffer for the screws so they do not damage the shaft threads (in case you go back to stock etc). The lower part of the shift knob (much like the stock one) then comes up and screws onto the knob thus covering the bushing/screw assembly.

I tried this, with the exact same shift knob (from Autozone)... the problem with it is that the plastic sleeve is round while the stock shifter is shaped to the rectangular/oval shape of the column... so the aftermarket shift is relatively easy to twist. Were you able to come up with a way to remedy that? I tried shaving some of those plastic teeth off the one end of the plastic insert, but ended up breaking it.

I'll put some pics up when I get home in the morning. Took some yesterday but got sidetracked then fell asleep.

Well here are some pics, hope it helps. Second is so you can see how much I had to cut off. I like it though, was only a 10-15 minute job.
