I noticed this morning on my way to work that I had a squeaking sound coming from somewhere on the front end of my Koup. It sounds like a low squeal and only happens when I'm in a gear (doesn't matter what one) and coasting. If I press on the gas, it goes away. If I put it in neutral and coast, it goes away. If I press on the brakes, it goes away. Soooo, I'm really not sure what way to go with this. Any ideas on what to try next? I'm trying to avoid taking it to the dealership, because I don't want to play their game, unless I absolutely have to. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yes, it's a manual. Any way to test if it's the throwout bearing? And what exactly does it do?

those just squeak if there bad when in netural if its going out thats how you'd know. soon as you put the clutch pedal in if it squeaks or rattles.. bad throw but your problem sounds more like my problem which would not be a throw out bearing issue

Yeah, as soon as I put the clutch in, the squeaking stops. The ONLY time it squeaks is when I'm in a gear and coasting. Once it's put under "load" the squeaking stops again. It's buggin me.

Nope, the squeaking only happens when coasting in a gear. As soon I apply the gas, or brake, the squeaking stops. That's why it bugs me so much, I can't get my head under the car to listen more closely...

hmm, Idk, sometimes wheel bearings squeak when there bad.. but normally those squeak anytime the cars moving.
if you have a jack stands and a place to work maybe jack the car up spin every wheel and see if you hear anything.

or if you have a friend jack the front of the car up.. put it in gear and see if you can pin point the sound.. just be careful of course chalk back tires ebrake.. ya you know the drill

that would be the easist way to be too places at once
Good luck with it

Wheel bearings were the first things that came to mind, but I figured the clutch and brakes wouldn't really affect them squeaking. I could be wrong on that. I might have to try and jack it up and see what I can find out....

When you took yours to the dealership they couldn't find anything?

nope one of those techs drove like 3 or 4 miles, came back said he could not even here the noise.. Honestly I just think he didn't want to do the work :(
"can't replacate the sound" or whatever they call it.

Hopefully you can figure yours out cause I can't find where my car is squeaking.

When you apply the clutch very slowly, does the squeaking noise goes away? For example, with small clutch pedal movement, or do you have to depress the pedal completely down?
A clutch disk which is worn out or soon to be will tend to push the diaphragm towards the back, this might put some extra drag on the clutch release bearing (throw out) My money's on the throwout bearing. Had a Jeep Wrangler that had this problem.

I have the same noise I think. Mine occurs when I first engage a gear, for example, I would be at a light and begin to drive in first gear and ill hear it as I engage the accelerator and come off of the clutch. It mainly happens in the "beginning" of the gear and then goes away and rarely ever happens in 4th,5th, or 6th gears.

Just got back from a drive to get a new serpentine belt (trying the cheapest fixes first). The squeaking is when I slowly accelerate, the very start of changing gears (IE 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, etc.), and when in gear letting off the gas (IE engine braking). I know those are vague descriptions, but I really can't think of any other way to describe it.

How difficult is it to replace a throwout bearing?

BTW I should mention my car is at 29,000 miles if this helps with troubleshooting...

Same with mine! But mine also happens when coasting in a gear. I notice it more when RPM's are around 1.5k to 2k.

Just out of curiosity, I checked my transmission drain plug (since I changed the manual tranny fluid less than a week ago) and while there isn't any drips, the plug head does have a slight film of Royal Purple gear oil on it. I wiped it dry and will check it again in the morning since I'm not sure if that happened when I changed it or it is leaking. This is starting to bother me...

I was going to change the tranny fluid to synthetic when i had the time but haven't yet but by what you're saying, that doesn't seem like that would even help this squeaking nose :( It's bothering me too man, just sux that nobody can figure out how to get rid of it or fix whatever is breaking possibly

For what it's worth, I don't think Royal Purple (Max Gear 75W-90) was worth it for the price. If anything I think my car shifts harder when cold now then what it did before. I might switch it out with Mobil 1 this weekend and see if that helps. Can't hurt I guess. I'll keep you guys posted.

hmmm throw out bearing.. Idk
and sombody asked how hard is it to change.. well its a pain in the butt
have to take the tranny out and the throw out bearing is inside the bell housing (transaxle)
good news is the part itself is cheap
but its the hours of labor that will cost.. :(
