The secret is cruise control.

I use it whenever possible. I also try to stay in as high as a gear as possible (MT) when not "having fun". I call it my own personal "eco mode".
My average mixed driving MPG (with more than a few jackrabbit take offs) on my 2010 Koup SX is around 9l/100km (26mpg), but on long drives, with the cruise set, even at 125 km/h (~80mph) I can get as low as ~6.7l/100km (35mpg).
I personally find the instant MPG display completely useless.
I've heard from multiple different people that the real "secret" is to keep it under a certain speed and your MPGs will go up considerably. For example, do 105 on the freeway instead of the 120-130 most people do.
