The manual does mention that it needs to be formatted a specific way:

When the formatted byte/sector
setting of External USB devices is
not either 512BYTE or 2048BYTE,
then the device will not be recognized.
• Use only a USB device formatted
to FAT 12/16/32.

I've formatted mine FAT32 with a default allocation size of 2048 byte. Works flawlessly.

Mind you the manual also mentions:

To use an external USB device,
make sure the device is not connected
when starting up the vehicle
and connect the device after
starting up.

Mine is always plugged in and no problem so far.

Couple of questions for me regarding how the USB key thing works. Actually for me, having all the Sirius, USB, ipod integration etc... is what drove me to this car in the first place. I am looking to get the SX model.

I owned an 09 Honda Civic for about 2 years now. That has the USB integration where I could plug in the USB key. 2 things drove me crazy...

1. I could not fast forward or rewind the song from the steering wheel controls... just advance/deadvance the song or up/down volume. I would have to use the middle console to fast forward or rewind. Again this is not as big of deal as the next...

2. Alot of songs I have a variable bit rate. When forwarding or rewinding the song, if it was a variable bit rate, it would not work at all. You could be 3 minutes into a song, and when you rewind it for a few seconds, it resumes randomly like toward the beginning. With constant bit rate mp3... like 256Kb or so, that would always work.

3. I doubt the Zune works on this... but are there other mp3 players that work? I would love to get like Rhapsody to go or something on a device, where I could load up the mp3 player with music and be able to have the full functionality from the steering controls etc...

Thanks!

I tested fast forward and reverse on songs using the steering wheel controls and I have no problems with any of the 30 or so songs I tested. Hold the up or down button for more than 2 seconds and it fast forwards or backs up the current song. Quickly tapping the button advances it to the next or previous song. I can faintly hear the song going in reverse or forward so I can tell where I want to stop. I don't know if any of my songs are vbr, I think most are cbr.

This is with using a USB drive. I have an iPhone but don't use it for listening to songs just the phone feature and bluetooth which works awesome.
Hope this helps.

I was disapointed to discover that the audio system does not recognize the MP3s the way a media player does. They are just files in folders. You cannot sellect by genre or artist. In fact the artist folder is ignored and you end up scrolling through album titled folders. This I can fix easily by renaming all the album folders to have the artist's name before the album title.

While dissapointing the folders only selection was not of great concern to me because I usually use the random function to have songs played randomly from all my music. So I split all my music up into three basic catagories and put each catagory on one USB drive. The plan was to select one of the genres, stick the USB stick in the port and hit Random. There's only one huge problem with this plan. Turning on RDM only randomly plays songs from one folder. I can't seem to find any way to set the RDM to the whole drive.

Does anyone know how to get this audio system to play songs randomly from a USB drive and not just one folder?

3. Try using an auxiliary cable for the Zune? You'll probably not be able to control the Zune from the steering wheel but you can use the Zune itself to chose a song. Also, the auxiliary cable is like $5. Pretty good investment.

Just bought a 16gb stick for podcasts...easier to drag and drop than sync, delete old podcasts, add new podcasts and resync my iphone...lazy, I know.

Would a sandisk 16gb stick work out of the box, or does it require formating to get rid of the preinstalled sandisk files?

Been sick and having felt like trying. Haven't left the house in about 4 days!

Thanks any advice guys!
