Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and later today I will be going down to the dealer to negotiate for my Koup.

I have a question about the USB port. I've assumed that it can navigate a file system on the USB device, is that correct? In other words, if I have my music sorted by Genre/Artist/Album/Song in folders, can I navigate down those paths to get to the albums?

I currently have a Pioneer Premier deck in my SUV that is able to do this, I'm really hoping the same is true of the factory deck in the Forte.

Thanks,

John

I dont have my USB Key quite so organized but yes it does follow the folders as created

USB is the greatest, no longer need to leave my Ipod in my car to freeze or possibly swiped!

It works but not like I thought

I have to play with it more when I actually take delivery of my car.

I went to the dealer today and they didn't have and couldn't locate the exact car config I was looking for so they had to put in a request. While they were jacking with that I went to the showroom floor and started playing with the stereo (had my USB thumb with me this time).

Anyways, it found my music even though it was four directories deep however I could not for the life of me figure out in what order it was displaying my folders, it seemed damn near random.

I'll have to play with it more and figure out how it is interpreting my file structure and maybe tweak it a bit to get it working the way I want. If I can figure out the magic file structure when I get my car I'll post it up here. Unfortunately they said with the holidays that could be a month long wait....

Ok I figured it out

I went to the dealer again last night (still waiting for my car) but they let me mess with the stereo on the one in the showroom.

The stereo will only display the folders that actually contain music so my sorting heirarchy is out the window. I'll have to come up with something new. :)

On the plus side, there doesn't seem to be a limit on the capacity of the USB. I put a 16gb drive in last night and it appeared to read the entire volume.

I tried a 40GB laptop hard drive with an IDE/USB adapter but it wasn't read my the Forte I tried it in. BUT, I think it was reading the primary partition on that drive, which has an NTFS format.

Does anyone know if this would work if you format the 40GB hard drive in FAT32? I'll have a chance to try in a couple weeks but I'm curious now...

I finally got around to formatting my 40 GB hard drive to FAT32 and trying it out on the new Forte... It sort-of worked.

It took about a minute and a half to read the thing, but that's to be expected since it mentions something like that in the User's manual. I could deal with that since the only reason I'd want to connect my entire 35GB music collection would be for a long road trip or something.

The problem was that the player kind "skewed" the start of the tracks by about 30 seconds. So when I skipped tracks it would start at about the last 30 seconds of the previous song and then the song displayed wouldn't actually start until that was done.

I'm gonna try to partition the drive in half and see if it likes that better, and I'll also try only putting a few songs on...

Any one else have this issue?

I've not tried a volume that large yet and to be honest, I probably won't bother. I'm going to go over to the dark side and finally buy an ipod.

This is the first reason I've ever had to actually purchase one. The fact that the USB interface ignores most of my directory structure is really annoying, I want the search and sort features that an ipod will allow.

If your interested I have a gently used ipod nano thats blue and has minor scuffing for sale? I'm buying a new orange one to match my Koup... I tend to buy everything that matches my car thats why I have a blue one from before... I'll part with it for $50 (plus shipping) - usb charge cord included (not the dealer cable) and still loaded with about 6 hours of music (most of which was bought from iTunes)... Just PM if interested.. I can tell you that the cord they sell that links the ipods to the radio controls is well worth it too..

Good point... I'll admit it's somewhat impractical but I guess I just like the idea of having my entire music collection in my glove compartment.

I didn't think my Forte read any of the directory structure on my USB drive... is there a way to get it to read some/any of it? So far it just seems to let me scan through folders that contain music it recognizes.

I have a question.....I have a Droid X smart phone and I'm wondering if my Forte will play the music I have downloaded to my phone just by plugging it in to the USB port. There's another hole there in the Forte made for an iPod but would I need to use the round hole as well or will it work if I just plug the phone into the USB port? As you can tell, I'm not up to date with technology....

The Droid will act as a USB drive... just enable USB access on the phone when prompted. The phone will also charge at the same time. As the phone acts as a USB drive, you can control the songs from the steering wheel.
