Vented Hoods

As I was driving through the drowning rain tonight from work at the prison, I pondered the following question: I know that vented hoods help keep the engine temperature down...but how do the vented hoods work without something like rain going down them and into the engine? Never seen a vented hood in person, so I really have no idea how this is done.

from what i know , most cars that come from the factory with vented hoods have a louvered sheet of metal underneath to prevent stuff from getting onto the engine
