What is the point of the dashboard light dimmer??

8054 Views 13 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  noodile
For the past couple of weeks, my dashboard lights have been very dim and I thought maybe something was wrong with them. But I start messing with the little dimmer knob and noticed that it controlled the dash lights. I had always thought it set a delay for the lights when you lock the car, but I was wrong.

Anyway, why is it there? What is the purpose of dimming your dashboard lights??

IDK the true purpose but at night when I drive and it's pretty dark out, I dim the lights so it isn't so bright and so it doesn't hurt my eyes when I look at the dash.

Hope this helps!

Does it really matter? He had a question so he asked it. Most do the same thing. It's a forum, i believe thats what these are for.

First
No Hating here. Be respectful.

and secondly,

To dim lights, i know when i drive at night i keep them at lowest setting because bright lights in the dash reduce your night vision. (Think airforce pilot, dim green lights to help with night vision)
Noodile I figured you'd be the first flipping on a post like this. You must have started seeing a shrink to control your rants or you are either still stoned from 4/20 LOL
You will also find. That when you run your headlights when it's still a little light out, you can barely see the dash or radio lights .But if you rotate the knob up it will brighten up the dash ...:D
The dimmer all the way up is for driving in the daylight with your headlamps on
I don't know about any of you all but I never mess with the switch. I just leave it on full birghtness at night. It doesn't hurt my night time vision that I can tell.

same here.
If you drive at night in the city then the lights wouldn't affect you to much. I did a lot of rural highyway driving and it was annoying have the lights blinding you when everything past 50 feet was pitch black. No that I am back in the city I just leave them at the highest setting with no issue.
I find the best setting on most cars is at about 80% of the maximum intensity. The adjustment is there for personal preference of course.

hahahahah, funny. in all honesty, i do flip out if its something thats been answered or something that has 2000 threads on, but for this, its honestly a noob mistake kinda.

PS: i might also be easy on this because a friend of mine drove WITHOUT his headlights on because when he turned them on he couldnt see the dash.

NO JOke. i had to show him the switch
