I live in Ottawa, it's winter time. I use the front de-icer/winshield warmer that is included in my Forte. Works great! Up until Wednesday morning where I heard a loud pop and now there's a nice symmetrical crack at the base of my windshield where the de-icer is located.

I looked around and found that in inclement weather using the front de-icer can cause weak spots in the windshield and over time can cause the crack.

I've since brought my car to the dealership and they took some pictures and have submitted the request for approval of warranty repair to have the windshield replaced. No big deal, just will save me the 300$ comprehensive deductible.

Could just be coincidence when I turned on the front de-icer and it happened almost immediately and because the crack starts from the end of the driver's side wiper goes up two inches, straight across to the other end of the passenger wiper and back down.

So I ended up bringing it to the dealership, they took pictures and sent it off to Kia for warranty approval (which is right, how often do they have to replace a windshield under warranty). They came back with approval and did the replacement on Tuesday. Forgot to take before pictures to post them up. But it all got resolved.

@Red Rocket: Bring it in to the dealership/servicer soon before the crack spreads so they get the initial crack, mine looked horrible after a week of crappy roads and shifts in temperatures.

Why not? It's under warranty for the next few years still and it really helps on those cold days where there's ice buildup by the wipers. It works like a charm for those times.

That sucks... my comprehensive coverage has a 300$ deductible. I was ready to go that route, but glad I could keep that in my pocket.
