Yesterday morning on the way to work I turned off the car in a buddy's driveway to wait for him to come out and when i went to start her up it would crank but no start at all. Just crank crank crank. I took out key then watied about 2 minutes then it started up fine.
Now this eve when i got home I turned her off then about 20 minutes later I tried to go out and same thing again except this time she's a no go at all. Just turning over and over but won't start!
I know this is a warranty issue but of course the dealership is an hour away and closed. Problem is that I have a child here with very high fever and am waiting for my second car to get home to take her to the hospital. That won't be for an hour or so.
if anyone has had this issue and found out what it was and if it's a quickk fix please let me know cause it might be quicker.
Could it be the immobilizer? Where is that antennae? Is there a wiring harness near the fuel rail that could have not been clipped and shook loose?
The fuel pump does activate when the key is turned. Everything seems to check out but just won't start this time.

Someone on here had the same problem......problem with the ECU? I think they just got it flashed and it was fine. It's cranking so ignition is good...just sounds like it's not getting the right fuel/air mixture. Or no fuel.

Amazing how things work out with timing!
I actually have oil change appointment at the dealer tomorrow morning now daughter's real sick.
I hope that the included roadside assistance Kia gives us will cover a 70km tow to Yarmouth!

Funny cause I actually did that yesterday morning for another reason then it started.
I'd go out and check but the car is at father in laws 5kms away. second car should be home soon tho. (hopefully)
I don't recall if the light was on for the immobilizer cause of course that wasn't on my mind but for sure could be the ECU or who knows...grr...

This is the override procedure from the manual:

Limp home (override) procedure
When you turn the ignition switch to the ON position, if the immobilizer indicator goes off after blinking 5 times, your transponder equipped in the ignition key is out of order. You cannot start the engine without the lime home procedure. To start the engine, you have to input your password by using the ignition switch. The following procedure is how to input your password of “2345” as an example.

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. The immobilizer indicator will blink 5 times and go off indicating the beginning of the limp home procedure.

2. Turn the ignition switch to the ACC position.

3. To enter the first digit (in this example “2”), turn the ignition switch to the ON and ACC position twice. Perform the same procedure for the next digits between 3 seconds and 10 seconds (for example, for “3”, turn the ignition
ON and ACC 3 times).

4. If all of the digits have been input successfully, you have to start the engine within 30 seconds. If you attempt to start the engine after 30 seconds, the engine will not start and you will have to input your password again.

After performing the limp home procedure, you have to see an authorized KIA dealer immediately to inspect and repair your ignition key or immobilizer system.

is there a default password? Since I was never asked to set a password... Hopefully it is 1111 or you'll end up wearing out your ignition just entering the code

Default password is ALWAYS 2345 - on those types of Kia equipped with the Limp mode. Not all are, and I can't say I have ever had to try it with a Forte... so *shrugs* I thought Kia did away with the four digit password back in 2006...

I have only ever run into one single car where the password has been changed... it's a royal PITA to change it (and completely pointless, all things considered) so chances of it being different as slim-to-none.

The best suggestion I have with anything "immobilizer light related" is to just keep trying. But DON'T crank the engine if the key is not recognized (light does NOT come on). This burns down your battery, heats up your starter, and if you retry it enough times without a valid code from the key, you'll actually completely lock-out the car, and make starting impossible.

Turn the key to ON, and if the light doesn't come on you should turn the key to off, pull it out of the the ignition, hold it to the tip of your nose and count to three. Then try a second time. If the light comes on then proceed to crank and start. if the light doesn't come on, then repeat the first set of steps until it does. Try your other car key if it's available, as well...

I HATE immobilizer issues... absolutely and completely. Almost impossible to troubleshoot (99% are intermittent and always start for me!) and every part of the system costs a fortune if you mis-diag it and is hours to get to (most immobilizer units are under the dash. Literally... dash - out.)

I found that Limp mode in the manual and figured i didn't have the password so I resorted to plan B. I shook the life out of the steering column and like magic been good all night now.
Got Daughter to the Hospital. Strep Throat but got the meds so all should be good.
I'll still get Kia to look at the car to be sure this doesn't keep happening as it will only keep going with the steering wheel at the lowest position and being 6 foot that's no good for long!
Funny thing is I had no flashing light or anything so not sure if Limp mode would have even worked? Anybody know?

Case closed...
official verdict from the dealer today is that the immobilizer antennae was just hanging near it's wire plug er whatever.
All fixed with no issues now.
weekend trip will happen after all.

Another "Will not start"

I apologize for reviving and old thread.. New member here..

I have 2010 Forte EX Auto sedan. Stock, no add-ons (only a roof rack).

Two months ago, I went to start it in the morning - car wouldn't start. Starter cranks, door locks and windows work, however - no dash lights and will not start. Had it towed to the dealer - the verdict "we don't know whats wrong with it". They were able to start it " by tapping on the relay box" under the hood.

Two days ago, same thing - only this time it started as soon as I pulled on the hood release latch. Its a dealer now. They were playing with it yeaterday and couldn't find anything - I guess they are consulting with "brains" at KIA.

Has anyone had this happened on the vehicle without immobilizer system?? I believe my EX doesn't have immobilizer. It has regular key and a remote for door and trunk opening.

I know that there is a KIA Service Action #SA012 to replace the relays in the electric fusebox in the engine compartment. This is to repair complaints with "concerns of inoperative A/C blower, high/low cooling fans or engine starter motor". If this is what you're experiencing, tell the damn dealer to look up the SA012 Service Action, and DO IT ON YOUR CAR.

Once more, KIA Service has their heads up their..... very tight dark smelly places.....

And... if you haven't yet, sign up for KIA's own tech website, KGIS. It's free, and you can find it here: Kia Global Information System (KGIS). It's worth the 1 minute of time to sign up. You'll get all the info on YOUR Forte, as well as complete schematics to the vehicle, all for FREE.

I highly advise that you sign up for it, as there may be OTHER Service Actions that apply to your vehicle. Any good KIA Service Department should run your VIN and all applicable SA's for your car should be flagged... but... it looks like you might be dealing with a not-good Service Dept.

My problem was with ignition mostly - the starter would crank but not start.. Sounds like there is no spark.

Pride Kia on Lynnway in Lynn, MA doesn't look like the most up to date Kia dealer..
