Anti Theft update installed and affected my remote start

In October I had the anti theft update installed as per the Kia recalls I had been receiving and it has affected my remote start. I did some research on here and found that Kia has known about the glitch for months but continued to install the update. I brought my car back to the dealer who in turn did research as well and he is trying to find a solution to rectify the issue but not having any luck. The car thinks someone is trying to steal it when I try to activate the remote and either the remote won't engage or if it does the alarm starts going off. I live in a complex and at 6 in the morning that is not acceptable. After Thanksgiving I am going to call Kia's corporate offices as they need to resolve this. I don't know how they are going to do that as once the update is installed it can not be taken out.
Anyone else having this issue?

I am also having that issue, my car was updated about a month ago. It took me several days to figure out how to get my remote start to work without engaging the alarm. However, if my car is too far away, I can't use the remote without the alarm going off. When I purchased the car, it came with two separate fobs. One to unlock/lock and one to engage the remote start. To keep the alarm from going off, I have to unlock the vehicle then lock it and engage the remote. I could just unlock it and engage the remote with my car stays unlocked . I am going to the dealership today for something unrelated but I am going to bring it to their attention and see if there's a workaround or if they can just disengage the killstart. I'm seriously not worried about my car being stolen, I have full coverage and gap insurance so take it if you want it you would be doing me a favor since I'm upside down on my car note anyway. Lol

12/18/23 Update

11/27 - emailed Kia who responded that the dealership had to open a tech line case online about the issue. I contacted the Service Mgr who said a Regional Mgr was coming in on 11/28 for a general visit and he would speak to him about it.

11/30 - I called Service Mgr who said Reginal Mgr was supposed to get back with some tips, and hadn't however he spoke to a Tech Field Mgr and he was going to contact engineers to look into. Yeah, right.

11/30 - I called KIA and they called the dealership and directly told him to open up this tech line case ( which he should have done at the beginning when the remote start wouldn't work).

12/4 - dealership had me bring car in so they could photograph remote start as per KIA request. I have never heard back from the dealership.

12/12 - emailed KIA again with my case number and said since they can't seem to fix this they can either replace the computer at their cost without the update in it or replace my car since they broke it (sarcastically) but I can't imagine how they will rectify this. I received an email back confirming they received my correspondence

12/19 - will be emailing KIA again

If you noticed I wrote the word sarcastically in parenthesis about that comment. That was me just having a little hissy fit. I did email KIA again on 12/19 and received the standard receipt confirmation of email. I am just so frustrated that it is cold out in the mornings and I cannot warm my car up with something I paid KIA for and that they ruined. Unless I hear back from KIA in the next week or so I think my next step will be to send a certified return receipt letter to the CEO of KIA America. Stay tuned...

So I have this issue as well. I have the viper system so basically the only way to remote start it is too unlock it first then do the remote start and then you can lock it again. Pain in the ass to do it like this but it’s a workaround until Kia can fix it.

I have the same issue on a 2013 Optima. It is very, very frustrating. Makes the remote start unusable with neighbors and of course now it's winter so..... lovely. Please let me know if you find any fixes. My local Kia dealer are worthless and so customer unfriendly. They gave me the solution to unlock with my non auto start remote and then use the remote start. Well I don't like the idea of leaving my car running and unlocked, but it really doesn't matter because if I do what they say it's 50/50 whether the alarm will go off 30 seconds later or not. I tried it 4 times and half of those it still engaged the alarm with the doors unlocked. This is unbelievable these programmers can't fix this in a timely fashion.

The anti theft update works as an enhanced deterrent to the car being stolen however it will not allow the remote start to function once the update has been installed. KIA has been aware of this glitch since Spring 2023 and is not taking responsibility for causing this situation.

I don't know if anyone else has offered this as a "temporary" cold weather solution, but here's what I did. I didn't know if it would work, but I thought what have I got to lose? I unplugged my horn and now when I use the auto start, sure the lights flash for a minute but the neighbors don't have to listen to a horn honk. It runs the full cycle and the car is toasty when I get out to it. It was a Godsend during the cold weather snap we had in Minnesota a week ago. This is on a 2013 Kia Rio and as they say "your results may vary" but for the next month or two (when you really need it) at least you're able to use what you paid for until these software geeks fix what they broke. I wish I would have thought of it at the start of the winter season. But better late that never I say.

My problem is that my remote start will not engage because of the anti theft update that KIA installed. My car thinks someone is trying to steal it and therefore will not turn on. When I push the button too much that's when the alarm goes off so disconnecting the horn in my case will not make the remote start work.

Ok, your problem is a little different than mine. My car starts just fine with the auto start, but then after 30 seconds thinks it's being stolen and engages the alarm. Then the alarm can only be silenced by the key in the door. I wasn't aware this update is causing different problems in different cars. I thought everybody had the same issue as me after the update.

The issue honestly wasn't with the dealer, the issue was with KIA Motors themselves as they knew installing the anti-theft update could interfere with the remote start however they did not inform the dealers of this. The Svc Mgr had never heard of the glitch before I told him and that I happened to come upon from doing research on my own after the remote start stopped working. That is negligence on the part of KIA Motors. When going in to have the update installed, consumers who have a remote start should have been given the option of installing it but agree to lose the functionality of the remote start. Myself and hundreds of others were not. Now they are replacing the body control module in a few weeks which is in essence a new computer without the anti theft update in it. I asked for this months ago as you can see if you look back on my timelines in this post. I hope the new module will solve the problem.

Tell them you want your old one back for "just in case the new 1 takes a sh!t"

Also, you can look online, FB marketplace, Forte/Kia & Hyundai FB pages for vehicle computer guys/garages to clear & reset your old one.

I have been waiting for your update, but have not seen it. Last I saw you were going to pick up your Kia after they updated the autostart software. Did that fix the issue? Or did they have to install the body control computer? Look forward to hearing so I know what steps I should take with my local dealer that doesn't have a clue.

So I am not sure how this forum lists stuff as my posts seem to be all over the place. I did post on 3/18 with the resolve but it's like hidden in other posts. Anyway this was the update:
3/18/24 - So the body control module finally comes in and they had me leave my car on March 14th to install it. They tried doing the 2nd anti-theft update but it did not solve the problem. They were now going to put the body control module in HOWEVER right before doing that, the Service Mgr happened to read something from a publication given to the dealerships and it had to do with an upload for remote starts. So they put this upload into my car and they called me to say the remote start now works perfectly. I'm going to get the car tomorrow so will test it out then. And now of course, it's spring where I am and don't need it. This was a 4.5 month journey that was a real pain and should have been fixed a lot sooner.
3/26/24 - So I am very happy to report that the remote start has been working perfectly and I have had to use it multiple times since getting the car back as the temps have been lower than usual. I really hope that anyone out there that has had the same issue I did after the anti-theft was installed tell their dealer to do this fix. It worked for me.

Very glad you got the issue solved! As for the "hidden" posts, click on the three dots at the top right of the page and select "Original View" toward the bottom of the menu. That will make the posts look like they used to (i.e. a list instead of nested).

I spoke to the Svc Mgr. First thing is, do you have a KIA remote start that either came with the car from factory or was purchased/installed through KIA later on like mine was? If it was a true KIA remote start then he said that you have to ask the dealer to program the remote engine starter. That is what they did to mine with the update. If you purchased a remote starter aftermarket brand then he said that is where the body control module would need to be replaced.
My suggestion to you is to go in person to the Svc Mgr and explain the situation. The fact that you can provide another KIA Svc Mgr's contact info for him to review this with is very beneficial for you. If you go there and they are not willing to look into this when you are providing what they need to do so, then next step is to contact the CEO of the Svc Dept. I have his name and contact info. You can let him know exactly what is going on and how they do not want to assist you in rectifying this problem. And I will be happy to write to him on your behalf as well. I say go down there and do a face to face. Keep us posted.

It is a Kia remote that they installed for me only about 11 months before the security update came out. They are 2.5 miles away and the next closest is 35 miles away. I could do that, but it would have to be on a Saturday if they have service. hours on a Saturday, I will have to check into that if all else fails. I will call again tomorrow morning and talk to the manager this time, I will give him one chance to hopefully actually listen to my story. That's more than the lady was willing to do this morning. I will explain that this fix is to reprogram the remote start. She was adamant that until Kia of America authorized a update specifically for my Rio by it's vin#, they would make no attempts to rectify this problem. I was thinking about her words today. This is all about them getting paid. If Kia doesn't specifically authorize it (just like recalls) the dealer won't get paid for their time. That's why she said it had to come through Kia of America with my vin#. They get paid a specific amount then to do each vehicle. (just like recalls and warranty work) Anyway, I appreciate all the information and will update after my next conversation.

I understand what you are saying however my car did not get fixed because my VIN # came through linked to a specific update. My car got done because they broke it by installing the anti-theft update. And that's the point that you have to push on. THEY disabled a working part of your car by THEIR actions. It is also important to stress that it can be fixed by one phone call to my guy John who said he would be happy to speak with your guy. Be insistent on speaking with the Svc Mgr should the woman give you any problem. If she does, ask to speak to the owner of the dealership.

I can't find it so let's try this again. So several weeks passed and because of family stuff and being super busy at work I didn't have time to deal with the issue. Plus as the weather has been warmer I have not needed the auto start, so you know "out of sight, out of mind". Well one day I'm looking at my mail and get a letter from KIA and thinking this is the remote start fix I open it to be somewhat disappointed as it is only telling me the parts are now available to fix the recall for the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit that short circuit and cause fires. Ok great, I call and make an appointment for that and decide I'm going in guns blazing and getting both things fixed that day. I got all the great info in hand from AnitaTee and start with the service advisor, not the condescending lady I dealt with last time but a man who was so full of himself he wasn't even listening to me. It was going nowhere fast and I demanded the service manager. Who as luck would have it walked in not 30 seconds later. I started over with my printed transcripts from here and the highlighted name and phone number. I explained just as you had that they broke my functioning auto start the last time they worked on it and wanted it fixed now because the fix is available and here was the proof. All he had to do was make a phone call to another service manager at another dealership. He looked at me and said "Sir we did not break your auto start, we did an update to the security software provided to us by KIA and unfortunately your vehicle was one of a few which suffered a side effect from that update." He went on to tell me that "he didn't care what someone on the internet said, there was no update available for my specific car and until one was sent to him from KIA nothing was going to be looked at regarding that issue." He then told me that "he would be happy to do the recall that I was scheduled for." He reached for my keys on the desk, but I grabbed them first and held up the paper. I said so you won't even make a phone call about this? He said "Sir, how many times do we have to..." That's when I held up my hand and said you are never touching my vehicle again. I got back in my car and left. I went to work then just steamed over the whole thing and thought about calling another dealership several towns over. But instead decided it was time to part ways with KIA. I started researching other vehicles and decided I wanted a GMC Terrain. I found a nice one and ended up trading in my KIA on it. I told the salesman at the GMC dealership it needed the HECU recall done still and the story on the auto start and showed him the issue and what the dealer had told me. (Just the part about how they would fix it as soon as the update was available from KIA.) No sense telling him that would probably be on the first of never as far as I was concerned. Oh well it's someone else's problem now. Thank you to AnitaTee and everybody on this forum for the advice and concern. I wish you all well with your fixes and hope you have better luck than I did.

There are times in life jrrsrc when you just have to realize that you would not get anywhere with someone who is as thick headed as your service manager was and this is clearly one of those times where you finally walk away. The issue was no longer worth your sanity and time and no one can say that you didn't try your hardest to get this resolved. I'm sad that you had to come to the decision of getting rid of the car but it was for the best in the end. I wish you all the luck with your new vehicle and hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

I have a 2023 Seltos S front wheel drive 2.0 non turbo engine. My lane keeping assistant and Lane following selections seem to still allow the car to wander onto the white line or dotted line. I feel as though it could be more effectively centered in the lane I don't know where to turn, because the Kia dealerships seem to be so incompetent or unwilling to help a customer.
Additionally, my girlfriend took her 2021 Kia Soul in for service at 20,000 miles and that kia dealer ripped her off, they did an oil and filter change, but then proceeded to do an engine injector flush, a transmission flush and a brake fluid flush totaling $750.00 and lied to her about the condition of her tires.
This is all a shame because Kia seems to make a pretty good product. But when you get to the dealer level their only incentive is to make money, and not necessarily fix the car under warranty.
I will not be buying another Kia Hyundai or Genesis product from them, Apparently the factory has no control over its dealers.
And I will tell everybody I know or meet, what a crap outfit they are.
