Had a TPMS glitch today...

Driving along the highway, after about an hour of steady ~70MPH of driving, the TPMS light started flashing. The "tire with an exclamation point in it" symbol flashed at me for about five minutes then turned off. Weird.

Any idea of the cause? My tires were/are all at 32 PSI.

I read an old thread that mentions a TPMS sensor on the spare tire - is this true? Even if the spare was low (it was), it doesn't explain why the light came on/turned off in the middle of the drive.

Thanks for any ideas on this one...

I had an 08' Elantra before the Forte, which I would assume uses a similar (or the same) Tire Pressure Monitoring System, and I experienced this a few times as well.

First, the TPMS light, indicates that the system has a malfunction, not that there is low tire pressure, the low tire pressure light is the one that looks like a flat tire, and they should, in theory, operate separate from each other.

As I said, the Elantra that TPMS light would indicate about every few months, never illuminating longer than 10 minutes or so, the first few times, I was going to have it checked, but the light always went away, and the system always indicated when I did in fact have a tire with low pressure without any failure.

I always assumed that the system was doing some type of self diagnostic or that for whatever a reason a sensor was temporarily offline. If the TPMS light stays illuminated, I would have it checked.

I have has this happen to me a few times in the past. It was always while driving for quite a while(atleast an hour) and I noticed that everytime it happened I had hit a bump shortly before.

I have that happen to me at high speeds and when I hit a lot of bumpy roads. I've heard others have taken it to the dealer and have gotten it fixed, I just ignore it because it never stays on longer than 2mins, nor does it happen all that much.

Thanks for your replies, guys. I'll just keep an eye on this.

Another odd electrical thing: for the past month or so, the passenger seatbelt chime isn't working (when somebody's in the seat, of course). Not a big deal, but I wonder if it has anything to do with the TPMS light? Electrical problems suck.

Maybe I'll see what the dealer can find out...

Speaking of electrical problems, on longer trips I have had my cruise control malfunction on me 3 times now. Not a huge deal, it just wont come on, if I pull over and restart my car it comes back on again. Ever had that happen?

I've been having this happen to me here lately.. It is usually when my traction control light comes on for no reason.

Also, today I was heading to work and something weird happened with my TPMS light. I don't have a sensor in one of my tires because it broke and they are expensive... So, today while I was driving the light turned off.. I can't figure out why since the sensor is still missing... It was weird. It came back on about 20 miles later.

I had this happen to me on several long drives recently as well. First was in very heavy rain so when I saw the light flashing I was thinking it was traction control kicking in from hydroplanning but then I realized it was the low tire pressure light... this one

Just a stock photo I found online but the Kia one looks something very simliar to that.

Then later I had it happen a few more times in completely dry weather rolling up the highway around 75mph. Sometimes it flashed sometimes it stayed on solid always went out after a few minutes though. Tires are all properly inflated so who knows.

The car needs to go back to the dealer to have the loud A/C and rattly engine looked at so I'm going to have them look into this while it's there too.

Bumps can set it off. I had it go on, and I thought it was broken since it was the day after I got my car back from the body shop (after some guy hit me and a few weeks of repair), but my tire was slowly leaking. Definitely worth stopping and checking your tires if you ever see it stay on for more than 5 min.

I've had this happen as well.

From what I've read sometimes police radar can trigger it to start blinking. Each time mine has went on the fritz there's usually a state trooper really close by.

I have had this same problem on a few occasions in my Forte5 and now my wife's 2012 Soul is doing it every now and then. The dealer checked it and said the car has thrown a fault code in the OBD system saying a TPMS wheel sensor is defective. They reset the code and it went away.....for a week. I have now gone to the dealer again and they said the problem is that the system cant identify which wheel the code is coming from. I am going to tell them at my next oil change that I want all 4 replaced to avoid this issue.

As for the ESC/cruise issues, I believe they're one in the same. I had these occur before, took the car to the dealer, turns out there was a fault code on the brake controller. Dealer replaced under warranty, and never saw the issue again.
