Reports from various police departments are showing a new increase in Kia and Hyundai thefts. Many of the thefts are in medium and small towns caused by teenage joyriders and professional auto theft gangs.

About three years ago a TikTok challenge publicised that Kias built between 2011 and 2021 lacked an engine immobilizer anti-theft device, making them easy to steal. Many teenagers them videoed themselves stealing and wrecking the cars.

The trend subsided after Kia made a free software patch available to substitute for the immobilizer. Police reports state about 40 percent of Kias have not been updated, and these are the cars being targeted recently.

Agencies reporting a recent increase in Kia thefts include Des Moines; Rome, NY, Copperas, Tx, Bucks County, Pa, and others.

In Iowa, Kia's are now the second most stolen cars with Hyundai third.

Kiausa.com has stated my 2010 Koup has an immobilizer.

I sent them in email with pics as proof of my 201 koup doesn't have factory push start system & oem metal key (i peeled away the rubber shield from my key) has no chip on it. Only having 1metal key, wife & I drove to Kia/hyundai dealership to get another key. I was expecting to pay $50-100 I paid $15. No chipped key. The plain non chipped key can turn on the car.

I included my post with pics & me installing a Ghost key push start system from Jordandistributors, pucs of the turn key Ignition cylinder & link to Forteforums. no insurance companies wanting to insure my koup due to not having an oem push start & immobilizer. Even with Ghost key installed no insurance companies wanting to deal with my koup.

Since their email response, they've blocked me completely, the "fnck you & fnck off" response.

Create a new email account and resend again (video if needed) and also report to the BBB.

Usually the BBB gets a quicker response.

Though it was a Chevrolet dealership a decade ago, when I reported them to the BBB, got a response real quick. Also a friend did the same with T-Mobil and same quick response right away. Maybe it's worth a shot 🤷‍♂️

There is a bigger issue here that nobody takes into account. Most of these kiaboyz and ignorant knuckleheads that don’t know the difference between one car or another. One of the bggest costs to the insurance companies right now are not the $4,000 Kia that got stolen, it’s the $40,000 Kia SUV the kiaboy bashed the window out of and ripped the column apart and can’t figure out why there is no place for the USB cable.. yeah they are that stupid. The problem is on a full size telluride that just got its glass and column bashed out could easily run $15,000 in repairs and it happens 2 two or 3 times to the same SUV. Screw the $4,000 forte that’s the least of their concerns
