If my driving conditions were 95% city like yours, I'd be the owner of a Jetta TDI. Or better yet, a Polo TDI BlueMotion if VW brings it over (From Basel, Switzerland, to Blackpool UK on a SINGLE tank, a 1300 km distance). Now that the diesel we get here is down to minimum acceptable levels for euro diesel engines, we should see an increase in diesel models available. Hell, I wish my Forte was available in a turbo diesel...

Jetta is about $9000 more than a Forte. Assuming $3/gal (it's actually less) I'd have to drive approximately 107,000 miles before I'd break even, this does not take into account maintenance or interest which would push it back even further. Unfortunately the T.A.R.D.I.S. was not available to me to take a quick trip into the future and bring back a car that will be available in the US in the next few years.

wow. I keep exact records since I purchased a month ago. I have an ex 4 door auto with fuel package. My ECO lights is almost on, and I use cruise a lot. I have been getting 24-26mpg. About 50/50 cty/hwy. I did see 27.1 once, but it's back down. Current mileage as of today is 2204. I have been using only 87 oct gas

I keep exact records too, my last tank was 23.5mpg 50/50 city/hwy. To put it in perspective my BMW525i got only 13.5mpg city but got 29mpg hwy. The EPA city test does not reflect real city driving.

Butundo, that's almost exactly my MPG. I thought maybe something was wrong with my car, now, maybe not.
my wife has a '07 prius, we've been getting progressively worse mpg with that car... the dealer told me it's because of the 10% ethenol that's in the local gas.

Mileage

I have 3400 on my sedan and the best I have gotten is 34 at 78 mph, just keep the ECO light on and the mileage will be great , I have noticed that at about 80 it will not be on.

I've had my EX 5 speed since the begining of Sept. and have been keeping track of mpg and have averaged 34.7.
That seems impossible to me, UNLESS:

You are using Imperial gallons (an you may be, since you're in Canada). If this is the case, your average MPG is 28.9 (to compare others' figures, since they are in US gallons).

OR

Your driving is almost purely highway.

I fully agree, which is why I would like a diesel Forte. But a Jetta is not in the same class as our Forte. In Canada, a base diesel Jetta is only C$2200 (9.75%) more than the base petrol Jetta, before taxes. A 9.75% premium for a diesel on my Forte would be just shy of C$2000. Sure, the payments would be higher, but I'd at least break even in terms of inital monthly cost.

Bottom line, give us diesel! The current generation of diesels performs quite well even in cold climates and are nowhere near as polluting as diesels of yore. I understand that the lack of diesels for our market is mainly due to inferior quality of the diesel at the pump here (compared to Europe). Until recently, our diesel was too dirty for the new diesel engines. The sulfur content has finally decreased to acceptable levels for the European engines, which is why we're seeing the BMWs and the MBs bring some of their diesel lineup. If I remember correctly, Kia sells diesels in Europe.

2.0L 4sp auto, currently averaging 27-28 mpg in winter driving with winter tires. I do about 85% hwy at about 70 mph (110 km/h) average. Car is not broken in yet, still running on original factory engine oil so I'm looking to forward to see if there will be any improvement after my first oil change. There should also be a definite improvement in these numbers when the weather warms up and once I also put back on my all seasons. These numbers so far are pretty much the same I was getting when I had my 2005 Toyota Corolla 4sp auto 1.8L before owning the Forte.

I didn't really see an improvement after first oil change. Averaging 9 l/100km (26 mpg(us)) with winter tires, 40% highway, 60% city.

2.0 5spd m/t

That's a little worse than the EPA ratings (25 city, 34 highway, 28 combined), but it's winter time.

Did a long trip this weekend and my numbers are:
95% highway driving at 115km/h cruise control
2.0L 5speed manual with TurboKits CAI
36.7 MPG or 6.41L/100km

2.0l with economy package: on interstate 95, 30.9mpg 37.1 imperial 7.6 l/100k, first long interstate trip (4000 miles on odo), I like this car but my BMW 525 got 31 mpg on the interstate, I'm not impressed

eh, my bmw 528e got about 42 highway, but it was also a pos most of the time lol
I'm not gonna complain about a car that runs perfectly and gets 35 highway, but your bmw probably wasnt as crappy as mine lol

Car now has 10,000 kms on it. On my latest fill up, first 1/4 of the tank was used during work commute. My commute is during morning and evening rush hour on the 401 in the GTA. Average speed during these trips are probably 60 km/h. I also have a 15-20 min drive from the city to the highway. I usually average about 28-30 mpgs a tank during the work week.

The next 1/4 of the tank was used to commute up north in the weekend. All highway driving with steady grade increases averaging about 115 km/h to 120 km/h. Before I came home, I filled up when the tank was half empty and my average was about 32 mpg or 7.36 L/100 km. Not too bad considering the first 1/4 of the tank was used to commute during heavy rush hour traffic. I'm sure if I did a whole tank of highway driving with the Forte I could achieve the advertised 34 mpg or even more. City driving is seems to what hurts the fuel economy of the Forte more than other cars such as the Corolla or Civic. BTW, my tires are inflated to the manufacturer recommended 32 psi. During winter, when I had softer snow tires on, I inflated them to 36 psi and it seemed to help with the fuel economy. I may do that with my all seasons.

...forgot to mention, I have a 4sp auto.

Just got back from a 1400 mile round trip from Michigan to Delaware and averaged 38mpg, with the AC on! The first tank was 38.9mpg, second 39.8mpg, and 3rd was 36 something. I averaged about 65 mph. I have found that if you keep the RPM below 2500 you really maximize the gas mileage. Unfortuantely, once you get in the city, the gas mile goes to crap real fast.

I'm getting 34 avg on my daily commute to town, about 1/2 highway time and 1/2 stop and go

i wonder if something is wrong with my new koup 2.0 w/auto trans...

1st two tanks - average MPG is 21.9. I expected a lot better mileage from it, to be honest. for those getting good MPG in city-type driving (most of ours here is 30-45mph 1mile stoplight square grid roads), did your car require a breakin of anykind or did you immediately start with great gas mileage?

My 5 speed Auto EX gets 29 mpg. Still breaking it in, it only has 765 miles on it. That's driving 40/60 city/highway. I'm not gonna complain. It would have to get high 30's (i.e. 37 or more) if it were all highway. I haul ass on the highway too, 75 mph average. Keep in mind this is in the hot/humid area of New Orleans/Slidell with the A/C kickin full blast. Consider me a happy camper.
