Hello, so I’m looking for any pointers on where to go next. Two days ago my check engine light came on and I’ve had zero drivability issues. The code is P0017. I saw on this site it said the VVT solenoids were a common issue so I started there. Drove it after the codes were cleared and it was good for the 30 minute drive. Woke up started the car first thing in the morning when it was cold and it didn’t start the first time. Tried again it fired up but the check engine light was back. Drove it all day and then decided to change the camshaft sensor as that’s what I believe the code was meaning with the camshaft/crankshaft correlation bank 1 sensor b meant. Cleared the code restarted the vehicle and the code was gone decided it was good to drive it again I started it and it started right up and no engine code. The second I put the car in reverse or drive the light popped back on and was showing the same exact P0017 code. We cleared it again and drove the car with the scanner attached and the timing seemed to of been doing what it should be. Got home and turned the car off. Bam light is back. Car is still under warranty but all dealerships are booked weeks out and I have an appointment weeks out and I’m lost as where to start next. Camshaft sensor was purchased at Napa. Anyone have any ideas? Anything would be appreciated. Also when changing the VVTs the oil was clean and looked normal.

Get a refund on the Chineseium made sensor. Kia/Hyundai sensors, modules & switches like it when it's oem/factory.

Also, hope you kept the oem camshaft sensor if not, you just voided warranty & dealerships may not do warranty repairs. They'll blame it on you & say the aftermarket non oem part caused the problem therfore voided warranty.

If you have the oem camshaft sensor, put it back on & keep clearing code or just leave alone after reinstalled.
Try not to drive it alot.

Record/document on video. Keep asking to be seen.

So, I contacted KIA before changing the sensors and they told me that as long as they were installed correctly that it would not null and void my warranty. I however saw a post that stated that the parts needed to come from the dealer or from NAPA as they are genuine parts rather than autozone advanced auto so on and so forth. I have the OEM part I can put back on the vehicle however I’m not going to be able not drive my car as I have a child and a job I must be present at everyday. I am going to try to call all the dealerships within a two hour range and see who can get me in the fastest but the one 5 miles from my house and job can’t get me in for 2 weeks.

SierraE93, it is admirable that you are trying to fix your own car!
You have apparently done the best you can and now need professional help.
The P0017 code could be a result of the camshaft mechanism itself or even a timing chain problem - not a solenoid or sensor problem. This is something you need to take it to a professional for. Use your warranty!
When something like this happens make an appointment even if you intend to fix it yourself. You can always cancel if you fix it instead of waiting until you try to fix it and then have to schedule - delaying your repairs.
Make sure you are using Kia oil filters - just to take that out of the problem possibilities.
It's unfortunate that Kias are selling so well now that their service departments are busy! When I first started buying Kias back in 2000 I never had to wait to turn a vehicle in for anything - usually would just drive it there and they worked on it immediately...:)
Please let us know what the problem turned out to be.
TIA!

Thank you! I called the dealership today and explained that this is keeping me up at night. I have an appointment with them in two weeks. The guy on the phone basically told me they have 6 cars in there now for the exact same issue and that the 2.0 engines are known for the timing problems thousands of people are experiencing. He told me to just drive the vehicle and keep driving it like usual until my appointment and that I’ll have to meet the criteria for engine replacement by the warranty company. I just fear because there are not any symptoms other than the light that they’ll tell me it doesn’t meet it and then my warranty will expire before it’s replaced or meets the criteria.

When a car manufacturer & employees tell owners/customers number of their vehicles are in there for the exact same issues & their engines & or transmissions are known for the documented known oem/factory problems leaving thousands of owners to experiencing & deal with it. drive your vehicle (still under warranty) & it's ok, keep driving it like usual until your appointment & that I’ll have to meet the criteria for engine replacement by the warranty company/stealership should let you know they know about their defective products & YOU the customer HAVE to meet their criteria to get warranty repairs & if you don't, you're denied & SOL.

This is why I'll never buy a new Kia/Hyundai. The slap & spit in your face along with the meet requirements for new replacement throw away engines & transmissions build to fail especially under warranty only to experience "we'll see if you meet our criteria to replace" responses.

One can take care of their vehicle the best they can & when sh!t happens the owners that take care of things cause it costs thousands & takes hours of hard work to buy only to be slapped & spat in the face & denied warranty repairs cause they "can't reproduce, find the problems & or you didn't use their parts, fluids & services, didn't come in when we the problems1st started & drove around & now you'rehere cause it's worse than before, installed a pine tree air freshener or led light bulb etc so those may have contributed to your problems & therefore voided warranty, but we'll see after our investigation" typical save their own asses replies.

Kia/Hyundai vehicles especially under warranty are failing more than the old 1st & 2nd gen Fortes, Velosters, Genesis, Rios, Elantras.

My old ass 1st gen Koup not a single oem/factory made problems, just the usual maintenance that's it. Also, I don't drive my Koup alot either for the fear I'm looking for problems just by turning it on, & yes I baby the living sh!t outbof my Koup. I don't allow anyone in it with food/drinks muddy ass shoes. Including my own family.

I even have 30gal hefty construction bags covering my drivers seat as to never get it dirty from my 2 jobs. Even from home doing yard, sweaty hard work.

Our Jeep Grand cherokee is an effing money pit told the wife Toyota 4Runner, she insisted Jeep now I've had to rescue her being stranded several times. Chrysler/Jeep Dodge Tipm (engine fuse box) bs known problems & there's no recall but will sell me a new 1 at $1,500.00. A POS part that will leave & continues to leave us stranded, no charge, no power, dead while driving at a stop/yield then all of a sudden turns back on like nothing happened. Has turned off while on the highway going 75mph with no "dumby lights" Xmas tree lights on coasting scary as f*ck then after a few seconds turn the f*ck back on again, like nothing has happened. Jeep dealership won't do anything but cannon blast us to buy new parts. Even after their bs "recall" external fuel pump relay fix, sh!t still turns off whenever the larger external rigged fuel pump relay gets hot that one can't even hold it in their hand effing hot. I work at a slaughter" processing plant" house & stealership. That damn JGC WK2 has new oem/factory parts & still takes a sh!t. Now that Mopar is under strike parts at stealerships are double the price & many of the parts are discontinued but still f*cking need them, like cross over coolant, can't buy oem/factory have to buy eBay Amazon but if that aftermarket causes more problems can't do work on it cause it's not oem & not installed by stealership techs.

Anyways, sorry for the rant. Pisses me off when customers that do take care of extreme high expensive purchases falls apart especially when taken care of & to be met with "if you meet OUR requirements for warranty repairs" is disgusting sickening & bullsh!t.

Time for another vehicle from another manufacturer.

What model year is your car? I have a 2017 Forte LX with the 2.0 and this engine is a work horse! I have 151,000 miles on it and haven't had any problems other than a coil pack going out on it. When I took it in for recall work, they replaced all 4 coil packs for free. This is the first I've heard about that being a common problem on the 2.0 and I have to question the validity of what the person you spoke to as being legitimate.

The 2.0 engines are being recalled I believe on a bunch of Kia’s made 2017 or sooner. Because the engine consumes too much oil and will cause early engine failure. I got this information from the Kia service center manager in my town. I also have friends who’ve been a part of the recall on those engines and gotten them replaced for free. Mine is now a timing issue

Interesting. I've done all of my own maintenance since day one of purchasing mine. I started out doing oil changes every 15,000 miles using Mobil1 full synthetic 5w-20 and a Mobil1 104A filter. I now have nearly 152,000 miles on it and have dropped to frequency to every 10,000 miles. It's using about a half-quart between changes, so it may be time for a new PCV valve. I'll probably do that next week some time. I sure hope you get your issue resolved with no out of pocket expenses.

Your Dad makes you pay him? Wow. I have a 33 year old son and I do all of the maintenance on his car for free. Every once in a while, I'll make him buy me some beer or lunch. My Dad never charged me to help me out, so I'm doing the same for my son. That and the fact that he doesn't know squat about working on cars.

My 23yr old pays me whenever they're too lazy, tired from work, can't get to repairs, too busy, not enough time. They'll buy the parts & ask if I can.

Yes, she knows her way around cars, power tools, tools, plumbing, concrete/rebar slab work, electrical, home/car audio & video & MMA. She even installed our 50gal electric water heater & pex piping.
